Assistant Feed Manager

Summary/objective

The Assistant Feed Manager helps manage and oversee the feed department and employees to maximize cattle performance, feed efficiencies, and profitability through successfully directing and coordinating activities of employees who are engaged in the daily feed operations.

Essential Functions

  • Monitors feed intakes, bunk conditions, cattle behavior to feed presentation and schedules ration set-up programs, based on variables such as days on feed, gender, weather, breed, etc.
  • Enters rations into batching system, creates and enters feeding schedule before each round of feeding ensuring compliance with all FDA regulations regarding medicated feed and micro ingredients.
  • Ensure cattle are fed high quality feed, accurately and with level distribution.
  • Reviews daily agenda for pen ships, moves, and transfers.
  • Ensure cattle are fed fresh feed and hay at arrival.
  • Ensures newly received and re-implant cattle are fed in a timely manner by coordinating feeding schedule with cattle department.
  • Communicates yard issues to the appropriate personnel for example, cattle inventory, cattle condition, pen maintenance, and or safety concerns.
  • Coordinates and schedules service and preventive maintenance measures for feed equipment.
  • Work closely with consultants to optimize cattle performance.
  • Manage, lead, and develop all feed employee’s through training, planning and assigning/directing work.
  • Active in the interviewing, selecting, and training of new employees utilizing the onboarding and orientation programs.
  • Ensures monthly housekeeping is maintained in all areas and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with all OSHA/Safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work environment

  • In this role you will be required to work at times in extreme weather conditions, such as rain, snow, wind, heat, cold.
  • Ability to work on-call on occasions, weekends, and holiday.


Physical demands

  • Ability to sit/stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work extended hours 10-12 hours per day.
  • This individual must be able to occasionally lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

  • Minimal
  • Travel to additional trainings may be required


Required Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 1-3 month’s related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience displaying excellent communication and leadership skills are required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) skills are a plus.


Preferred Education And Experience

  • Successful experience in a calling feed.
  • 2 years supervisory or management experience
  • Good understanding of OSHA guidelines is needed as well as an understanding of cattle accounting system.
