Clarkson Potter, a leading publisher of illustrated lifestyle books in the categories of Food & Drink, Design, Photography, Gift & Pop Culture, and Entertainment, is excited to hire an Assistant Editor for our Gift and Culture / Entertainment team. T he position offers the opportunity to contribute to and immerse yourself in a creative and hands-on imprint.
Reporting into an Executive Editor, you will assist senior staff in editorial and administrative work, including key roles in the acquisitions and author / agent relations processes. This role requires the ability and desire to work in a highly collaborative environment with other members of the editorial team, as well as our design, production, marketing, and publicity departments—and of course authors (and their agents), whom we view as both our talent and our partners. We expect the Assistant Editor to develop a strong knowledge of our operational systems as well as an eye towards identifying successful trends and talent, including reading and providing input on proposals, drafting catalog and flap copy, and participating in the development of new book ideas. The ideal candidate is committed both to the granular work of publishing and the creative work of supporting storytelling that inspires readers.
It is our expectation that the Assistant Editor largely supports senior staff, but will also quickly begin work towards building their own list as an editor that speaks to, and is representative of, the diversity of our potential audiences and our society as a whole. We encourage and expect our editors to prospect new trends and have a broad range of interests—whether in wellness, social issues, gaming, mushroom hunting, gratitude, tarot, or trends we haven’t yet considered. It’s preferable for the candidate to be able to commit to commuting to our New York office three days a week, to collaborate closely with colleagues.
Please apply by the due date of July 12th and include you resume and cover letter.
