We are seeking a Washington, D.C.-based Assistant Editor with experience working at a fast-paced online publication, a strong knowledge of the city, and a solid understanding of SEO-driven content.
As Assistant Editor, you’ll support the USA editorial team with daily news stories, write new features, and edit and produce freelance content. You’ll also commission SEO-driven stories across cities in the northeast. The ability to spot trends and engage with metric tools to plan an editorial calendar is key.
This person will be responsible for developing Time Out USA’s new social media channels (Instagram and TikTok), including brainstorming ideas, shooting video and writing copy where necessary.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, self-starter who can work independently and collaborate virtually with a small team.
Responsibilities
Manage the Time Out Washington, D.C. news channel; pitch and write compelling posts about news, culture, city life, lists and other categories as requested
Recruit and manage a network of talented and engaging local writers; edit content and produce content
Help manage and develop the key social media accounts for Time Out USA, writing compelling and fun posts in the Time Out voice
Contribute to both local and national features and projects as requested
Assign, edit and produce features across the northeast
Maintain monthly edit calendar; write, edit and produce SEO-driven content
Ensure that all content meets the company’s SEO and quality standards
Engage with metrics and traffic analytic tools for editorial planning
Qualifications:
2 to 3 years of professional experience as a writer/editor in a fast-paced online production environment
Ability to work with various tools of the trade, including content management systems, and write for social media platforms
Excellent writing, editing and interviewing skills; strong news judgment
A track record of producing content that engages users and grows audience across multiple platforms
Awareness of city culture, trends, news and events throughout the calendar year
Ability to multi-task and to work on deadline
An understanding of SEO and its application to content production and promotion
