Assistant Director Student Success

Job Description

The Assistant Director Student Success works with Assistant Dean and the three offices comprising Student Success at the Newhouse School – Recruitment, Advising and Career Development. This position is responsible for multiple projects including transfer and first year admission, all awards processes, student funding requests, student participation in School governance, event planning and marketing of events, assessing effectiveness of student success initiatives, Welcome week events, assisting Career Development with updating the School’s alumni network and other projects and areas of need in student support.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree and interest in higher education/student experience desired.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • Requires excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, strong writing skills to create correspondence and marketing pieces.
  • Public speaking skills and ability to solve problems, initiate projects and take on responsibility.
  • Solid judgment to make decisions on your own. Must be able to balance multiple projects at once and redirect quickly.
  • Ability to work independently and anticipate and self-direct projects required.
  • Knowledge of Excel and various social media apps required.
  • InDesign experience and strong technical skills extremely helpful.
  • Knowledge of SU preferred.
  • Flexibility, creativity and ability to work as a team member is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee SU/Newhouse Scholar award process from identifying candidates to soliciting applications; organize and run faculty Awards Committee meeting to select winners; manage communications with SU Scholarship Office to ensure proper procedure and requirements are followed.
  • Execute entire Newhouse scholarship and recognition awards process, confirming awards and amounts annually awarded with budget director; communicating Newhouse award information to department chairs, faculty leads and academic coordinators; verifying winners, planning and executing annual Awards Ceremony.
  • Run Faculty Award selection each spring: confirm eligible faculty, create ballot and poll graduating students while advising student committee to determine winner.
  • Review transcripts and identify Kappa Tau Alpha candidates using national chapter criteria each winter; invite students and work with national chapter director to ensure induction.
  • Maintain Newhouse scholarship portal, triaging student requests for funding and addressing in a timely fashion.
  • Hire and supervise graduate worker to maintain accessible website for students, including outside funding, scholarship and fellowship sources and ensuring they are updated.
  • Work with director of admissions to lead multiple weekly information sessions for prospective families and students. Field questions and represent school at university-wide admissions events and at off campus engagements. Assist recruitment team during admissions events and visiting days with set-up, communication with families and staffing information table.
  • Appoint, oversee and advise student representative committee, providing student members to serve on faculty-run committees. Work with faculty committee chairs and assign students to committees; handle issues and questions at that arise with student participation.
  • Serve as Student Success liaison with six to eight student professional organizations, managing and allocating annual budget of $5k.
  • Organize and run annual September campus media fair from securing participants to executing the event which includes communication, marketing, working with rental company, set up and take down.
  • Create and maintain social media presence for Office of Student Success.
  • Serve as Qualtrics, Excel, Google Suite, Microsoft Suite and all other software guru for Student Success departments.
  • Create surveys, ballots, applications and submission portals to support all aspects of this division. Review these tools annually and update as needed.
  • Coordinate intra-university application and admission process twice a year. Dispense information about intra-university transfer process to admitted students across the university.
  • Compile all application materials and create accurate, accessible database for faculty committee to access and review. Work closely with faculty committee chair on timeline and facilitate timely review of applications each June and January.
  • Provide advice and technical support to faculty committee members as needed.
  • Communicate with student applicants to clarify application process and answer questions.
  • Notify students who were not admitted and work with assistant dean on notification of admitted students.
