Assistant Director of Pre-Health Advising (temporary), Dean's Office - Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences

The Assistant Director of Pre-Health Advising - in a temporary role - reports to the Director of Pre-Health Advising of Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences. The Assistant Director advises pre-health students. The Assistant Director manages the Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program including overseeing the linkage programs with medical schools. The Assistant Director is responsible for all the financial affairs and marketing of the pre-health and post bac program. The Assistant Director updates and presents the pre-health workshops. The Assistant Director manages shadowing programs and opportunities. The Assistant director maintains close working relationships with the Director and the other Assistant Director of Pre-Health Advising.

Consistent with Georgetown’s commitment to cura personalis, this position, though primarily an academic and programmatic advisor, supports and advises students on any and all matters which interfere with personal well-being and academic success. This position will make frequent referrals to – and have regular contact with – campus partner offices, and must be well-versed in the services those offices provide.

All advising dean’s staff participate in College Academic Council events, office retreats, New Student Orientation, Parent and Family Weekend, and Commencement activities in various roles.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Advise pre-health students and document appointments.
  • Oversee all aspects of the Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program from application to admission, support through the program and through application to health professions schools
  • Track medical and dental school acceptances in the annual database
  • Assist with Pre-Health Application Workshops
  • Assist the Director of Pre-Health advising as needed.

Work Interactions

This position reports directly to the Director of Pre-Health Advising. This position interacts daily with any of the College/NHS/SFS/MSB advising deans. At any given time, this position might interact with any of the 800 pre-health and post-baccalaureate students, or any of the faculty who teach them. This position has the authority to and is expected to handle and resolve many delicate and complex conflicts between student and faculty, student and parent, parent and the institution, with all appropriate tact, sensitivity, and a sense of the academic standards to be applied to each such conflict. The position will also interact with colleagues in partner offices across campus.

Requirements And Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required
  • 2+ years’ experience advising students on careers in the health professions
  • Broad knowledge of health professions admission practices, industry trends, and best practices in health professions advising
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to identify cultural nuances and navigate a complex network of constituents with sensitivity, poise and diplomacy
  • An understanding of Georgetown’s Jesuit and Catholic identity
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and set priorities
  • Strong orientation to detail; managerial experience desired
