The center focuses on pressing political, economic, and social issues that will define the region’s trajectory, proposing constructive, results-oriented solutions to inform public sector, business, and multilateral action based on a shared vision for a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future.

AALAC – home to the Caribbean Initiative – builds consensus for action in advancing innovative policy perspectives within select lines of programing: U.S. policy in the Western Hemisphere; Colombia’s future; Venezuela’s multidimensional crisis; Central American prosperity; US-Mexico ties; China in the Americas; Brazil’s trajectory; Caribbean development; regional economic development and commerce; and energy transitions. Jason Marczak serves as the center’s vice president and senior director.

Overview Of The Role

The Atlantic Council seeks a talented, dynamic, and entrepreneurial individual for a position as Assistant Director with a broad focus, including Central America and regional economic development in its Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center. The Assistant Director will help manage and lead the Center’s programming on these portfolios, as well as help with additional lines of work as needed. They will provide strategic guidance to the Center’s growing Central America and economic development work, serving as a partner and bridge between international and local stakeholders, and will help elevate the profile of the Center’s work on these issues.

The Assistant Director will form a key part of the team and work closely with the Vice President/Senior Director and Deputy Directors of the Center in an innovative atmosphere. This position requires collaboration with colleagues in other regional and thematic centers across the Atlantic Council.

The ideal candidate is passionate and an entrepreneurial self-starter. They demonstrate expertise, background and experience on Central America and regional economic development issues. They play a representational role for the Council by publishing articles, participating in public-facing event, and taking media interviews. The Assistant Director will help with fundraising for the expanding portfolios. Beyond focusing on expanding the Center’s Central America and economic development work, the Assistant Director will provide expertise on broader economic issues across Latin America from the unique vantage point of a citizen of the region with a clear understanding on how policy proposals will be received in-country including in the regional leader in innovative policies.

This position is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters on a hybrid schedule. Pay is commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers starting at $55,000. Applications submitted by June 21, 2024 will be prioritized for consideration.

Job Responsibilities

  • Advance the Center’s existing Central America and regional economic development programming and play a pivotal role in refining the strategic course for the Center’s growing Central America work, focusing on the development of programming and fundraising, in collaboration with Center leadership;
  • Support grant writing, budget development, and financial management;
  • Co-manage grants with external funders, as relevant;
  • Serve as a strategic partner and bridge between international and local stakeholders, including multilateral organizations, financial institutions, international political groups, country representatives, and others;
  • Steward and regularly engage important Center and Council constituencies, such as US and Latin American policymakers, business leaders, and civil society representatives;
  • Coordinate programming and events, including written products, with a particular focus on Central America/regional economic development and additional programming, as needed;
  • Produce relevant documentation and summary of meetings both for internal record keeping and external knowledge sharing;
  • Oversee programmatic aspects and financial records of the Center’s Central America and regional economic development programming;
  • Brief the Center’s leadership on current events in Central America, as well as other events that may affect the region;
  • Proactively look for potential areas of collaboration within the Center and with other Atlantic Council centers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, international affairs, or international development;
  • 2-4 years of combined professional experience in international affairs, public policy, and economics;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of political, economic, and social issues in Central America; experience living, working, or studying in the region a plus;
  • At least 2 years of research experience on Central America/regional economic issues;
  • At least 2 years of experience in project or event management;
  • 1-2 years of experience working on economic monitoring and impact evaluation;
  • Ability to represent the Atlantic Council to external constituencies, such as senior officials, diplomatic officials, board members, and donors;
  • Proven track record in managing multiple projects simultaneously and a demonstrated ability to work efficiently and collaboratively with both junior-level and senior-level colleagues;
  • Extensive networks and contacts in Latin America, specifically Central America;
  • Native-level Spanish-language and English-language skills (writing, editing, and oral communications), and superior communication skills;
  • Proven ability to balance multiple tasks in a fluid environment;
  • At least some experience with WordPress, Canva, InDesign, and others to produce and edit visual content such as videos, photos, infographics, and others;
  • At least some experience with Salesforce or a similar grant and database management;
  • Excellent organizational, logistical, and administrative skills;
  • An extensive understanding of Washington's policy environment;
  • Expertise in traditional and social media.
