Assistant Dean of Students

The Charter High School for Law and Social Justice provides students from the Bronx with a comprehensive High School education and lays the academic and social groundwork for success in college and careers. Using a theme of law and social justice, the School will engage, inspire, and empower students and will equip them with the academic skills to earn a Regents diploma and gain admission to the college of their choice, prepared for success. The School will create a pathway for its students to law school and careers in the legal field. The path will include mentoring opportunities with law students and attorneys and partnerships with institutions of higher learning. These institutions will offer college and law school experiences to our students and share the academic benchmarks and habits necessary to gain entrance to college and law school.

Primary Function

The Assistant Dean of Students will assist the Principal and Deans with supervising student and family engagement events and play a key role in managing school-wide routines and behavioral expectations that develop a learning culture.

Desired Qualifications

  • Required - 1-year experience in a related field
  • Required - NYS Fingerprint Clearance
  • Required - High School Diploma
  • Preferred - Associate’s Degree in a related field
  • Experience working with teenagers
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Platforms, PowerSchool, etc
  • Experience working in teams to develop and implement systems and processes to increase effectiveness and efficiency
  • Demonstrate success in working in urban school settings.
  • Demonstrate a deep personal responsibility for the organization’s success and passion for education
  • Familiarity with Restorative Practices
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally
  • Strong interest and commitment to education and academic achievement
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
  • Excellent analytical skills and demonstrated resourcefulness in problem-solving
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the organization's mission and establish, implement, and maintain or modify systems and procedures that support the mission
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and/or under the direction of management, as needed
  • Conversational Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Culture Support:
    • Model and positively enforce the school’s mission, vision, and culture to students, families, and staff by creating a positive school climate
    • Knowledgeable/Engage in restorative practices
    • Supervise student spaces and movements during morning arrival, dismissal, transitions, recess, lunch, outside bathrooms, and other school routines
    • Foster an inclusive and positive school culture by recognizing and rewarding students for academic accomplishments, school involvement, and community services
    • Collaborate with the Culture Team to set and enforce standards for school culture, including behavior, academic performance, and attendance
  • Family Engagement:
    • Communicate with families on an ongoing basis, as often as necessary, to provide updates, learn more about students, and share resources to assist students at school.
    • Work with the operations team as a liaison to the broader community to increase family engagement and empowerment for greater collaboration
    • Work with the operations team to organize and manage a calendar of workshops and events.
    • Work with the operations team to develop and manage communications, such as surveys, mailings, newsletters, etc., to engage and involve families in events at the school and the larger community.
