Assistant Band Director

Role: Assistant Band Director

Summary:
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Assistant Band Director to lead our K-8 school's band programs and assist the high school band program. As K8 Band Director, the selected candidate will be responsible for fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment that promotes musical excellence and student engagement. This role involves directing band performances, teaching music classes, and facilitating a positive learning environment for all students. Recruitment and retention of middle grade band students to the high school is a priority. The Assistant Director will also assist the high school band director as needed and at the direction of the high school director.

Reports to: Reports regularly to the Head Band Director and provide him/her with oral reports and/or written summaries regarding the status of curriculum, instruction, assessments, and professional development.

Salary Schedule: Paid on Certified Teaching Pay Schedule based on degree and teaching experience.

Education And/or Experience

  • Valid teacher’s license with appropriate endorsement(s);
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills; and
  • Meets health and physical qualifications.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Direct and Manage Band Performances: Plan, organize, and direct school band performances, including concerts, football games, parades, and other community events.
  • Curriculum Development: Develop and implement a comprehensive band curriculum that meets the educational standards and goals of the school.
  • Student Instruction: Teach music theory, instrumental techniques, and ensemble performance to students of varying skill levels.
  • Leadership Development: Cultivate leadership skills within the band by appointing and training student leaders such as section leaders and drum majors.
  • Budget Management: Manage the band program's budget, including fundraising efforts and allocation of funds for uniforms, instruments, travel, and other expenses.
  • Recruitment and Retention: Actively recruit students to participate in the band program and work to retain them throughout their high school career.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with other music teachers and school staff to enhance the overall music education program.
  • Event Planning: Coordinate logistics for rehearsals, performances, competitions, and special events.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with parents, alumni, and community members to build support for the band program.
  • Professional Development: Stay updated on the latest music education techniques and participate in professional development opportunities.

  • Attention to Detail: Noticing and correcting nuances in musical performance and ensuring that all logistical aspects of performances and rehearsals are meticulously planned.
  • Patience and Persistence: Teaching new musical skills and concepts requires a great deal of patience, especially when working with students of varying skill levels.

Physical Demands

  • Physical Stamina: Standing for long periods during rehearsals and performances, often conducting and actively engaging with the band.
  • Manual Dexterity: Demonstrating and assisting with musical instruments, which requires fine motor skills.
  • Auditory and Visual Acuity: Must be able to hear and critically assess music quality and see student actions clearly to provide accurate feedback.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Handling and transporting musical instruments and equipment, which may involve lifting heavy items.
  • Voice Use: Frequent use of the voice for teaching and directing can be demanding, requiring vocal endurance.
  • Travel Requirements: Traveling to performances, competitions, and events, which can involve managing transport of instruments and students.
