APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Penn State University Park is seeking a highly experienced student affairs leader and skilled administrator to serve as the Assistant/Associate Vice President with responsibility and oversight for a portfolio that focuses on student engagement and student life. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the AVP is a member of the Student Affairs senior leadership team for a division of 28 administrative units of over 500 full-time and approximately 1,000 part-time staff. In addition, Student Affairs at University Park provides support for the student affairs operations at 20 Commonwealth campuses. This senior leader will support the strategic initiatives around creating intentional co-curricular learning, advancing student world readiness, assisting students in overcoming barriers to success, fostering DEIB, and creating an environment that focuses on student well-being.
The AVP will be a collaborative leader who works well with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. Knowledgeable about current issues and best practices, this person will have significant student affairs and administrative experience in higher education and an advanced degree.
Specifically, this AVP will provide oversight for a range of student engagement areas including Career Services, Student Leadership and Involvement, Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL), the HUB-Robeson Center, and the Parents Program, while providing shared oversight for Student Orientation and Transition Programs and the Student Engagement Network. Other areas that may be included are some of the following: Residence Life, student government or student fee board advising, Commonwealth Campus Support, facilities oversight, shared oversight for World Campus student affairs, and providing leadership with the VP for the student affairs budget and development efforts.
The position is being posted as either an assistant or associate vice president depending on the distinct qualifications and experiences of the successful candidate and the resulting portfolio.
Responsibilities include:
This position will be filled at an Assistant Vice President level or Associate Vice President level, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a master's degree or higher plus eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for the Assistant level. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher-level jobs.

- Serve as a senior leader of Student Affairs providing insight, lending support, and collaborating across the division and the University
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for student engagement initiatives with a lens toward belonging, community, cocurricular learning, and student success
- Provide supervision to the directors of Career Services, Student Leadership and Involvement, Fraternity and Sorority Life, the HUB-Robeson Center, and the Parents Program, while providing shared supervision for Student Orientation and Transition Programs and the Student Engagement Network
- Represent the Vice President for Student Affairs on university working groups and committees such as expressive speech, emergency planning, strategic planning initiatives, and others
- Support human resources, budget planning and management, and strategic planning within the units
- Provide support and structure to Commonwealth Campus colleagues working in student engagement and student life
- Work closely with student governments, FSL governance organizations, affiliate student organizations, and other student leaders

- Thorough understanding and knowledge of student affairs – student success, engagement, learning, assessment, risk management, equity and belonging
- A high level of cultural competence in working with diverse populations
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Experience in engaging with student leaders and advising student organizations
- Strategic planning, budgeting, and financial management experience
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, administration, and community partners
- Knowledge of and experience in the oversight of some or all of the following areas: fraternity and sorority life, student involvement/organization advising, service and leadership, career services, parents programming, event planning, campus center/student union, residence life, orientation/student transitions
