Job Description

Purpose:

To curate, support and inspire a stellar cohort of artists who will develop Meow Wolf’s Los Angeles, CA.

Exhibit
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Compensation: $35.79 to $41.16 per hour, based on experience.

This is a part time position with an expected average of 20 hours per week.

The Los Angeles Artist Liaison will work with the Director of Artist Collaboration to assist in curating, recruiting, hiring and developing our roster of external visual artist collaborators on the Los Angeles Meow Wolf exhibit. They will be an important connection point between Meow Wolf Inc and the Los Angeles exhibit to help maintain Meow Wolf aesthetic values balanced with community goals for our external collaborators.

They are responsible for helping recruit a diverse roster of artists for the Los Angeles exhibit. They will work with these artists closely from the Request for Proposal till the closing of the exhibit assisting with communication and project coordination as an on-site resource for our artist cohort. They will provide the artists with local resources that may help with the execution of their projects, facilitate in person meetings and be a liaison between Meow Wolf and the artist.

Once the exhibit is open, they are responsible for correspondence with all artists interested in working with Meow Wolf on assigned, rotating projects, including driving contact, assisting in running small Requests for Proposals, rerouting communications to other departments as appropriate and maintaining positive professional relationships with collaborators. The Artist Liaison maintains knowledge of artists and skill sets cataloged in the database. They conduct artist and community research, with an eye toward connecting the team to new artists interested in working with Meow Wolf and maintaining institutional relationships between teams. They act as a driver on renovations projects along with phased projects.

The Artist Liaison is accountable for cultivating an expertise in Los Angeles based collaborators with a goal of continuing opportunities for engagement with local creatives. They will work closely with the community outreach/social impact team to align and balance goals. They may also be tasked with developing creative and innovative strategies for utilizing Meow Wolf’s relationship with an artist.

Requirements

You will identify and cultivate a strong collective of artists who will develop an immersive and elevated art experience for guests.

How you will do it…

  • Oversee Los Angeles artist database, is familiar with the Los Angeles artist community needs
  • Work closely with Creative Directors, Creative Producer and Director of Artist Collaboration on all projects
  • Maintain a balance between aesthetic quality and inclusivity in their curation
  • Assists in managing RFPs and review processes in Los Angeles
  • Manage correspondence — incoming from interested artists, and outreach to communities on assigned markets
  • Monitor artists with the installation process. Be on site as needed, aiding the artists’ access to resources they need on site, or in the community and perform regular check ins with the artists
  • Maintain communication between site vendors, MW team, and artists
  • Assist with event coordinating/planning events for collaborating artists as needed
  • Maintain positive relationship with current Los Angeles collaborating artists, act as point of contact for further collaborations with these artists
  • Seek out new strategic partnerships in the region
  • Manage entries from Want to Collaborate form; shares and manages incoming inquiries, assesses incoming entries, maintaining a deep familiarity with contents of the database and keep it highly functioning
  • Manage Collaborating Artist visits and potential collaborator visits to Los Angeles
  • Assist in upgrades pipeline once the exhibit opens —help artists navigate from the proposal stage through successful implementation of their project
  • Establish working relationship with operations team, once exhibit opens, to continue to assess appropriate collaborators for Upgrades projects on an ongoing basis

To be successful in this role…

  • You bring a minimum of 5 years experience in art, curation, event planning, non-profit or entertainment environments
  • You hold a strong knowledge of the Los Angeles art scene, community and potential partnerships
  • You exhibit proven work experience with professional artist management or collaboration
  • You have proven curation work, work in contemporary arts or entertainment where curation was necessary
  • You hold the ability to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, and weekends for special events
  • You possess strong organizational and database skills
  • You bring good project management skills
  • You present experience working with budgets, artist fees, and artist compensation

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • The artist liaison role will be in based in Lost Angeles, CA.
  • This is a variable hour position with a flexible schedule which includes weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • This position works primarily in an indoor setting with exposure to noisy environments, dim lighting, strong visual effects including strobing lights, special effects, fog machines and small and/or enclosed spaces.
  • This role will routinely require physical activity such as light lifting and bending over during site installation.
  • The employee will comply with company and OSHA standard workplace safety protocols. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
