Job Summary:

The Applications Administrator’s primary role is to assist with the management, audit, design, maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Furman's directory and identity management, and productivity platform environments.

Secondary responsibilities include assisting the Systems Team with the management, troubleshooting, upgrading, and patching of server OSs, virtual environment software and hardware, and various other server administration duties, as needed and as assigned.

Job Responsibilities

Productivity Platform Administration

  • Serve as the primary administrator of Furman’s productivity platform.
  • Support platform users with various technical and operational issues.
  • Perform necessary updates and upgrades to systems as needed and in a timely manner.
  • Manage, maintain, and troubleshoot on-premises connectors to the productivity platform.
  • Design, implement and/or maintain business processes and procedures within the platform for various departmental access and access requests.
  • Collaborate with supervisor and appropriate colleagues to ensure optimal security and confidentiality in design, operation, and maintenance of the platform systems, data, and access.
  • Collaborate with supervisor, the ITS Information Security Team, and other colleagues as appropriate to manage spam, malware defense, user education, and timely responses to security incidents.
  • Assist with the design, implementation, and audit of identity and access management and other related processes.
  • Manage and audit the productivity platform network access accounts and permissions.

Directory and Identity Management Administration

  • Troubleshoot and mitigate issues with directory and identity management services.
  • Support users with directory account technical issues.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of identity and access management processes.
  • Coordinate account management with HR and Academic Affairs for faculty, staff, affiliate, student, and guest accounts.
  • Audit and maintain directory user and network access accounts and permissions.
  • Develop strategies for data backups, disaster recovery, and business continuity.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations, standards, and policies.
  • Audit and maintain access accounts and permissions to cloud-based content management, collaboration, and file sharing tools.

Systems and Server Administration:

  • Create and utilize shell scripting to support user and system administration processes related to job functions.
  • Coordinate with team members in Systems and Networks to maintain current systems and network team documentation for disaster recovery and business continuity needs.
  • Monitor availability, performance, and integrity of systems for networking, compute, and applications.
  • Assist the Systems Team with the operation, maintenance, and upgrades of the virtual environment hardware.
  • Assist the Systems Team with the operation, maintenance, and upgrades of the virtual environment software.
  • Assists the systems team with the data backups, disaster recovery, and business continuity of all servers under the Systems Team's direct responsibility.

Systems and Technology Team Member:

  • Participate in on-call rotation.
  • Provide backup support to other systems team members.

Relationships:

  • Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisor, and members of other departments to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information, and make suggestions related to mutual goals.
  • Frequent contact with student employees, other departmental staff, and liaison faculty and staff to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information, and make suggestions related to mutual goals.
  • Occasional consultation with faculty, staff, and students to achieve successful outcomes related to job duties.
  • Occasional communication and/or consultation with vendor/contractors to facilitate project direction and understanding.

Responsibilities for Final Decisions:

  • Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.
  • Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor

Reports To:

The Applications Administrator is a member of Furman University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) staff, reporting to the Director of Systems and Networks.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field from an accredited four-year college or university. Related Information Technology experience may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.
  • 3 years’ experience in planning, implementing, and supporting Microsoft Windows, Active Directory, M365, and related applications (Outlook, Exchange, Word, Excel, Teams, One Drive, etc...) in local and cloud hosted environments.
  • 1 years’ experience in supporting Azure Active Directory.
  • M365 certification preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with Cisco UCS hardware and software preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with VMware/ESXi software preferred but not required.
