Anthropologist

Job Location: Office of the Chief Medical Examiner—Eastern Office (Tulsa, OK)

Introduction: The Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner Forensic Anthropology Division (FAD) consists of three full-time anthropologists that serve all 77 counties in Oklahoma. Together, the FAD collaboratively manages the duties and responsibilities described below and is seeking a fourth anthropologist to join their team.

Education and Experience: A minimum of a master’s degree in anthropology, or closely related field with an emphasis in forensic anthropology, is required. Candidates must have demonstrable forensic anthropology experience, including forensic archaeology, laboratory analysis, and authoring case reports. Medicolegal death investigation background/experience is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities: Determine forensic significance of skeletal remains reported to the OCME; aid law enforcement with the search and recovery of human remains; process/prepare remains for evaluation; provide oral and/or written reports on biological indicators, identification, and trauma; work collaboratively with investigators, law enforcement, and dental, fingerprint, and DNA experts for identification purposes; document cases radiographically and perform radiographic identifications; enter and manage unidentified cases in NamUs; collect and submit DNA from unidentified persons; contact families of missing persons to collect antemortem data or familial DNA; review potential matches for unidentified persons; communicate with law enforcement, family members, and legal representatives from diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds; testify as required; provide professional instruction/community outreach; participate in agency committees; and other duties as needed or requested by agency management.

Special Requirements: The FAD spends up to 25% of their time in the field. Successful candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, a desire/ability to perform forensic archaeological searches and recoveries, and the capacity to manage the physical and mental discomforts inherent in the work. Forensic anthropologists are occasionally required to respond to calls/scenes outside of normal business hours and during emergencies/severe weather events. Successful candidates will be required to pass a rigid character and background investigation and maintain membership in AAFS.
