ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER

Brief Description Of The Job

Performs tasks related to the enforcement of animal control laws within the City of Taylor. Educates community about stray or vicious animals and related diseases; operates animal holding facility; captures, impounds, relocates, and when necessary, disposes of animals; and maintains records. Investigates animal complaints. Issues citations for violation of City of Taylor ordinances as permitted by ordinance or applicable state law. Prepares reports as appropriate. Testify in court as directed.

Organizational Relationships

  • Reports to Animal Control Supervisor.
  • This is a non-supervisory position.
  • Has contact with other city employees, local veterinarians, Texas Department of Health Inspectors, city and county law enforcement officers, and the general public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: This is a description of the way this job is currently performed; there is potential for accommodation.

  • Performs maintenance, to include cleaning and maintains animal holding facility, grounds (light grass work), vehicle, and equipment consistent with state regulations.
  • Patrols for stray, vicious, or injured animals and responds to citizen complaints.
  • Maintains up-to-date records and files on animals collected.
  • Removes dead animals, transporting and disposing of properly, including apprehending, lifting and carrying animals.
  • Transports animals to veterinary clinic as needed for medical care and/ or euthanasia.
  • Responds to emergency calls (cruelty to animal, animal bites, control of poisonous or dangerous animals, and stray animals.
  • Oversee and/or make presentations to schools and civic groups about animal control; publicize animal control activities as directed.
  • Issue citations. Testify in court.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

Knowledge And Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Laws and regulations governing the licensing, quarantine, and impounding of animals;
  • Diseases communicable from pets to humans;
  • Livestock management;
  • Euthanasia procedures.

Ability To

  • Use a “catch pole” and traps;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Maintain appropriate necessary certifications and Texas driver’s license applicable to job responsibilities;
  • Maintain a good driving record;
  • Work nights, weekends and be able to respond to emergency after-hour call out.

Acceptable Experience And Training

  • High school graduate, or its equivalent
  • One year of experience working as an Animal Control Officer preferred;
  • Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certificates/Licenses Required

  • Basic certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) as a Certified Animal Control Officer or the ability to obtain Certification within first year of employment
  • Texas driver’s license.
