Analyst, Acquisitions & Production Research

Sony Pictures Classics, a New York-based distributor of quality independently made films from around the world, is seeking an Acquisitions & Production Research Analyst to join the Acquisitions team

The key function of this position is the researching of potential acquisitions titles for Sony Pictures Classics. Such research must include a deep analysis of the film landscape and the ongoing impact and developments within the social media environment and its effects on popular culture and movie going habits. Individual in this position must know and love movies, take initiative and be willing to think outside the box.

Job Responsibilities

  • Position will interact with a network (production companies, talent and management agencies and filmmakers) to collect information on potential projects
  • Position will study trends in social media - who and what has presence and who and what does not – and how such profile is applicable to the film marketplace
  • Position will read and evaluate scripts, works-in-progress and finished films and recommend certain projects for acquisition consideration by Sony Classics; in some cases, through the lens of social media and/or popular culture
  • Position requires a fluency in social media and a keen sense of communication via major social media portals as well as an interest in studying what drives people to see films in theaters and what films can work theatrically, as well as study the impact of theatrical marketing on box office
  • Position will track projects in early-stages of development and production and work with both the VP, Acquisitions and the EVP, Acquisitions & Production to isolate titles to target for acquisition
  • Position will maintain, on an ongoing basis, an updated list of competitor acquisitions, prices and terms having to do with such deals when available and when/how such deals were completed (festivals/markets/other), as may be available or obtained
  • Position will work with the assistant to the EVP, Acquisitions & Production to track competitor releases, theater openings and maintain an updated chart of VOD related activity of Day / Date driven companies along with VOD data obtained from traditional distribution companies
  • Position organizes and leads twice weekly acquisitions meetings with the VP & EVP, Acquisitions & Production and Co-Presidents, which includes large volumes of information on deal status, upcoming screenings, top festival targets and creation of action plans

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent work experience
  • 2-4 years of prior experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong time management, project management and organization skills
  • Professional communication skills both written and spoken, with a strong eye for detail
  • Prior experience in Acquisitions is a plus

The anticipated base salary for this position is $65,000 to $70,000. This role may also qualify for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.
