Alma College AmeriCorps Program

AmeriCorps Alma, MI

Alma College is located in the city of Alma, Gratiot County, in the center of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Alma has a 21.8% poverty rate (U.S. Census Bureau, 2022). Local poverty manifests itself in a wide range of community needs, including food insecurity, homelessness, and lack of access to post-secondary education or training for high school graduates as well as adults with disabilities. Other issues that connect with poverty is the lack of resources available for the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities and lack of access to artistic experiences. Finally, there are some serious pollution situations in Gratiot County, e.g., a Superfund Site as well as continuing pollution of the Pine River. Alma College's planned program strategy will take a two-pronged approach, addressing components of local and regional poverty; our strategy will focus initially on the cities of Alma, St. Louis and Ithaca and expand more broadly into surrounding communities as capacity permits.
