Job Title

Administrative Assistant 3

Department

CCC | Comprehensive Cancer Center

The OSUCCC-James Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) is a comprehensive bench-to-bedside research initiative focused on harnessing the body’s immune system to fight cancer at all levels — from prevention to treatment and survivorship. PIIO researchers work to understand fundamental mechanisms of cancer immunology towards the development of novel immunotherapeutics in the areas of systems immuno-oncology, immunogenomics, cell therapy and translational immuno-oncology.

The PIIO has launched the Center for Innate Immunity and Inflammation (CIII) to study of mechanisms of innate immune system/inflammasome sensing of pathogen associate molecules (PAMPs) and self, danger associated molecules (DAMPS); identify genetic and epigenetic variation linked to immune responsiveness and immune- related disease; and generate new diagnostics for inflammatory disease and new regulators to stimulate or inhibit innate immune signaling for vaccine, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory purposes. The CIII is led by new OSU recruit and renowned cancer researcher Glen Barber, PhD, FRS. Dr. Barber focuses his research on cellular sensing mechanisms that trigger the body’s defense measures against microbial infection. His work has shown that these immune responses are essential for protection against diseases such as cancer but can also initiate inflammation if aggravated. His team discovered the cellular protein STING (stimulator of interferon genes) and showed how nucleic acids spark production of host defense proteins that help control infection as well as stimulate antitumor immunity. In parallel studies, Dr. Barber pioneered the use of viruses as cancer therapeutics and vaccines. He has published over 170 scientific articles and nearly 30 book chapters or reviews in such high-impact journals as Nature, Cell, Immunity and Science Immunology.

We are seeking an administrative professional to serve as executive assistant to CIII Director, Dr. Barber. Job duties include:

Answer telephone lines, answer questions, screen and refer appropriately. Open, screen and distribute mail. Establish and maintain confidential files.

Special Events: Coordinates reoccurring seminars, symposia, and meetings such as the PIIO weekly research in progress seminars, invited speaker seminars, annual IO symposium, scientific advisory board meetings, etc. This includes meeting planning, room reservation, set up and take down, and coordination of refreshments.

Document Preparation: Maintains Director’s CV. Assists in drafting proposals, presentations, reports, and other documents.
