Adjunct Faculty - Accelerated Sciences (Part-Time)

Southern California University of Health Sciences offers intensive science courses, both online and on-ground*, that can be completed in five weeks. Read more about the Accelerated Sciences here: https://acceleratedsciences.scuhs.edu/

Under the direction of the Director of Accelerated Sciences, part-time instructors are responsible for teaching intensive sciences in Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Physics. Designed for the working professional, Accelerated Science courses are scheduled on two full days a week (Monday/Tuesday, Thursday/Friday and Saturday/Sunday), across 5 weeks (instructors may be assigned to teach both lecture and lab, or just the lecture or just the lab). Instructors will teach content to students from a variety of backgrounds and with different science proficiency levels, work with Instructional Leads to develop and administer assessments, and monitor student progress throughout the class.

  • Due to COVID19, on-grounds are being offered as Interactive Online lecture and labs through Zoom.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned in accordance with course syllabi and course objectives.
  • Use appropriate teaching strategies and methods to ensure student engagement; meet with students during office hours as needed
  • Maintain course content in Canvas, SCU’s online Learning Management System
  • Participate in training to prepare to teach
  • Play a key role in student success by modifying teaching methods based on assessment results and best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Play a key role in student success by monitoring student progress/class performance and referring students to tutoring and remediation as needed
  • Grade student work and provide timely feedback on assignments (at least once a week)
  • Submit students’ grades and course reports at the end of the class
  • Remain current in subject matter and update course content when appropriate to reflect the current levels of knowledge in the discipline
  • Participate in department meetings and contribute to development of course materials and assessments as needed
  • Work in an academic team environment in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Promote the University vision, goals, and objectives to internal and external constituencies.
  • Maintain licenses and certificates necessary for employment eligibility.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • MS, MA, PhD in relevant course content; MD or equivalent acceptable with relevant teaching experience
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level preferred.
  • Experience working with non-traditional students
  • Ability to adapt to curriculum changes and to design new and appropriate laboratory learning activities. Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and analytical instrumentation
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology in lecture and laboratory applications

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Windows Operating System (Excel, Word and Outlook. Online (Web browsers and websites) related to job responsibilities; and Hardware (Mouse/touchpad and Keyboard).

Directly reports to the Chair of the Department regarding the majority of the instructor’s teaching assignments.

Attendance

Must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks; where applicable.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Reports to the Director of Accelerated Sciences regarding the majority of the instructor’s teaching assignments; reports to the Biological Sciences or Chemistry instructional lead regarding academic content and instruction

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance

instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability

to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
