About This Position

The City of Phoenix Water Services Department, one of the nation's largest potable water utilities, treats and delivers safe, reliable drinking water to 1.5 million customers across approximately 540 square miles. Phoenix Water Services also manages the sewer collection system and treats wastewater for 2.5 million residents in metropolitan Phoenix.

The Accountant II position in the Management Service Division of the Water Services Department will perform advanced professional accounting work of a varied nature, exercise independent judgment, perform duties under general supervision, and review work of accounting clerks on the Accounting and Reporting team.

Duties may include

  • Review/approval of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) invoices.
  • Review/approval of purchases in City's eProcurement system.
  • Review/approval of journal entries.
  • Periodic expense postings/allocations to City's general ledger.
  • Review/approval of department's financial system access requests.
  • Monthly financial reporting for assigned divisions.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Location: Phoenix Water Services Department, Phoenix City Hall.

Work Hours: 8-hour regular shift with flexible work start/end times with supervisor approval; two days per week telework option available after successful completion of probationary period and with supervisor approval.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with great attention to detail.
  • Well-developed competencies in complex decision making, effective communication, personal and interpersonal skills, and managing projects.
  • Familiarity with accounting transactions rules, regulations, and internal controls.
  • Proven proficiency in financial software and spreadsheets, such as SAP and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work independently and also work well with a team.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex agreements and administrative regulations.
  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.


SALARY

Pay Range: $55,806 to $100,235 annually.

Hiring Range: $55,806 to $86,590 annually.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of professional level experience in accounting.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus experience in/with:

  • CIP.
  • Microsoft Excel.
  • Accounting software such as SAP (or similar Enterprise Resource Planning [ERP] system).
  • Financial reporting.
  • Accounts Payable.
  • Accounting and finance research.
  • Supporting multi-level customer service.
  • Principles, methods, and practices of municipal finance, budgeting, and accounting.
  • Communicating with middle management staff, executives, committees, or boards, and working in a team environment.
