General Responsibilities

As academic officers of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, Academic Deans report to the Dean of Academic Affairs and serve under the leadership of the appointed Senior Associate Dean. They are an integral member of the College Deans Staff and serve on College and University committees as requested by the Dean of Academic Affairs.

Academic Deans oversee and ensure the progress of undergraduate students toward graduation and ensure all graduation requirements are met before clearing students to receive their degree. They provide counsel and advice to students regarding their academic plans in conjunction with premajor and departmental advisors. Academic deans coordinate communication between students, faculty, parents, and other campus partners about academic affairs.

The Academic Deans publish, administer, and interpret policies for undergraduate students, faculty, and parents. They are responsible for ensuring that policies are applied conscientiously and that exceptions are granted in consistent ways. Academic deans strive to be compassionate and fair in their interpretation of policies while maintaining a commitment to equity for all students.

Collectively, the Academic Deans have the authority and responsibility to interpret and adapt academic policies and decide when a policy change needs to be brought to the Arts and Science Council for consideration.

Specific Portfolio

Academic Deans assume additional responsibilities integral to extending the academic mission of Trinity College, and demonstrate significant leadership within the college or university. Due to the shifting nature of the work needed, as it relates to the implementation of a new curriculum, the details of a specific portfolio for this position are in development.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Ph.D. or equivalent

Experience

Work requires three years of experience in academic administration or a OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE related setting to become familiar with academic policies, programs and regulations necessary to coordinate related services and activities. At the end of the fifth year of service an Academic Dean shall be considered for promotion. Promotion decisions are based on established policies and procedures for Academic Deans.

Skills

  • Familiarity with academic policies, programs, and regulations necessary to coordinate related services and activities, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in program development, teaching, mentoring and research.
  • Experience working with a diverse population of undergraduate students.
  • Successful track record of establishing credibility and trust.
  • Attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, responds quickly to students and other constituencies.
  • Familiarity with student information systems
  • Must be consistently accessible and available to students during regular business hours.
  • Fluency with common software applications including databases, word processing, presentation, student information systems and cloud-based computing.
