The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity’s (OMA&D) mission is to create pathways for diverse populations to access postsecondary opportunities, nurture and support their academic success, and cultivate a campus climate that enriches the educational experience for all. OMA&D provides a wide range of educational services to minority and educationally/economically disadvantaged students at the University of Washington and throughout the State of Washington. OMA&D has an outstanding opportunity for two Academic Counselors Grade 6- Student Services.

EOP serves over 6,500 undergraduate students with new student orientation, holistic and culturally responsive academic advising, financial aid guidance, scholarship opportunities, and a vast network of support from key campus partners, both internal to OMA&D and external, such as Housing and Food Services and the Office of the University Registrar. This position requires the use of sound judgment and thorough understanding of degree requirements and available student services. The position also requires an understanding of OMA&D and our mission to provide a wide range of educational services to underrepresented, first generation and educationally/economically disadvantaged students at the University of Washington and throughout the State of Washington.

The Academic Counselor will work with university staff, faculty, and community partners to serve UW OMA&D students. Working closely with other members of the Academic Counseling Services staff, this position will provide consistent outreach to students as well as coordinate and implement successful retention and graduation strategies for OMA&D students.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Primary responsibilities for the Academic Counselor include:

  • Provide one-on-one developmental advising for a caseload of over 550 EOP undergraduate students. Participating in planning, development and implementation of programming and activities for students; providing personalized advising and counseling for EOP students in areas of academics, career, financial aid, financial management, personal issues, and graduate/professional school; provide regular, high volume drop-in advising hours; Perform outreach and strengths-based advising to students on their advising caseload who are on academic alert, academic warning, academic drop, or who are not meeting continuation requirements. (50%)
  • Represent EOP in collaborative partnerships on and off campus; work with program staff to develop innovative programming that fosters the academic, social, and emotional well-being of EOP students and maximizes their opportunities at UW. Maintain liaison relationships with academic departments, administrative offices, and agencies which provide assistance to participants within and outside the university; collaborate with OMA&D and other university programs focusing on student retention, graduation, and success. (5%)
  • Participate in regular EOP team, ACS, and OMAD staff meetings for continuous improvement purposes. Keep and maintain proper and timely student records and Compass notes. (5%)
  • Engage students in research, internship, and leadership opportunities. Promote student preparation for graduate/ professional school opportunities in collaboration with the McNair Program and Early Identification Program. Assist and provide advocacy to students with administrative processes that impact their enrollment at the UW, such as Former Quarter Drop Petitions, Financial Aid Satisfactory Progress Appeals or Reinstatement Petitions; provide students with letters of recommendation or support as appropriate. (5%)
  • Participate with Lead EOP advisers in the program’s communication plan by designing and developing weekly newsletters that are emailed to all 6,500 EOP students. Develop all fliers and brochures for the EOP team and EOP Quarterly POD events. Help manage and develop relevant content for all of EOP’s social media accounts. (30%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (5%) REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of two years of experience in academic advising or related experience. Demonstrates knowledge of academic degree requirements and curriculum, student services, and community resources; demonstrated history of working with a diverse multicultural student population, which includes working with low income, first generation, and/or underrepresented populationsEquivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED: Masters degree, familiarity with the administrative structure of a large university; experience navigating institutional barriers and demonstrated ability to be an effective advocate for diverse students; understanding of the complexities of identity formation and intersectionality; experience working with Tribal communities, immigrant communities, and/or marginalized communities; understands issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice Application Process: The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
