Simpson College seeks candidates for a full-time 10-month Academic Coach/Advisor position in the Center for Academic Resources. Reporting to the Director of Academic Coaching, the Academic Coach/Advisor works directly with students on academic probation and other students experiencing academic or personal obstacles to achieving their potential. This position places a particular emphasis on supporting and developing programs for academically at-risk first-year and new transfer students including, but not limited to, students admitted by committee (provisional admits) and students undecided on a major. Additionally, this position assists in the implementation and maintenance of several peer-assisted learning programs.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Advise and coach a diverse population of students with special attention to first-year students and students on academic probation.
  • Advise students on college policies and procedures.
  • Provide individual academic and life skills coaching to students on topics such as time management, organization, study strategies, note-taking, reading, and test-taking strategies to a variety of students including adult learners and student athletes.
  • Teach up to two academic success courses per semester (SC 120: Simpson Success Strategies and/or SC 125: Student Success Seminar).
  • Assist students in connecting with faculty on academic related issues.
  • Refer students as appropriate to campus resources such as Counseling Services, Health Services, Accessibility Services, Financial Aid and the Business Office.
  • Conduct outreach to at-need students to promote early intervention and support.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Athletics Department by collaborating with staff to facilitate and deliver academic resources to student athletes.
  • Collaborate with key campus departments in support of student success such as Faculty (advisors and instructors), Financial Aid, Registrar, Continuing and Graduate Programs, Career Services, Residence Life, Counseling Services, Health Services, and TRIO Student Support Services.
  • Create, coordinate, and deliver presentations and open workshops on academic and student success topics.
  • Monitor Watermark Student Engagement and Success for early alerts and coordinate as needed with other campus colleagues to ensure students receive timely support and access to resources.
  • Assist with assessment initiatives to improve outcomes and effectiveness of academic coaching and CARs-related initiatives and programming.
  • Support college-wide programs such as Admitted Student Day, SOAR, and Welcome Week.
  • Stay apprised of evidence-based practices and other developments in the field of academic coaching and student success.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information per FERPA regulations.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required, preferably in Counseling, Education, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching or advising students regarding student success with a demonstrated record of impact.
  • An understanding of and experience working with the educational, cultural, and social needs of a diverse student population.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships among students, staff, and faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as working as a part of a student success team.
  • Superior attention to detail, problem-solving skills, organization, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience teaching coursework, facilitating workshops, and/or leading presentations.
  • Ability to speak and write in Spanish preferred.
