The Woodlawn Campus of the University of Chicago Charter School (UCW) opened in September 2006. It has a three-part mission: 1) to assist students in developing the habits of mind, work, and heart to be successful in college and good citizens of their community; 2) to contribute to the community through student research, service, and leadership; and 3) to improve teaching and learning by serving as a site of professional development for teachers and school leaders. Woodlawn Middle School educates students in grades 6 - 8.
Position Summary
The Physical Education and Wellness Instructor will be responsible for providing physical education, wellness and health instruction for grades 6 - 8. This is a full-time salaried teaching position with the responsibility of preparing students, regardless of tested ability, for success in college. Responsibilities include analyzing and using formative assessment data to improve instruction, designing curriculum and assessments using the learning standards of the University of Chicago Charter School, participating in and leading professional development activities and enabling students to contribute to the community through the creation of new knowledge.
Job Responsibilities
Plan and implement Physical Education & Wellness lessons based on Illinois State and NASPE standards
Implement standards-based Health curriculum
Maintain a safe, structured environment where all students feel encouraged to achieve their potentials
Work closely with the members of the Physical Education team to organize space and equipment
Analyze and use formative assessment data to make instructional improvements
Provide accommodations and modifications for all students to be successful
Create project based learning opportunities to share with the staff and students of the UCW community
Create engaging activities that help all students gain an in-depth understanding of the 5 components of fitness
Participate in department and school-wide professional development
Perform necessary duties including but not limited to student arrival, advisory, student dismissal, and after-school duties
Contact parents on a regular basis to update them on the progress of their student(s)
Abide by all state and federal mandates in reporting sexual or physical abuse and neglect
Uphold the rules and regulations as set forth in the Student Handbook
Work closely with parents and larger community to support students and school
Collaborate with department members in planning for work of the department and/or school-wide student research projects. Participate in regular meetings to plan curriculum, lessons, and review class and student progress.
Position Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and current Illinois teaching license with Health and Physical Education endorsements
Excellent teacher with proven experience enabling urban students to meet high expectations
Must be reflective and receptive to professional feedback and coaching
Must possess strong written, oral, and technology-based skills
