AN INVITATION TO JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN We are gearing up to run an effective campaign in support of the ABC at the next federal election, and we invite you to join us. The election will be sometime in the next 10 months, and our campaign will start next month, with a planning workshop to agree on seats, messages, and tactics. The campaign will be co-ordinated nationally, in collaboration with ABC Alumni, but most activity will be seat by seat, face-to-face, trying to make sure that the voters deliver a parliament which has the maximum number of pro-ABC MPs. Key Goals of the Campaign: 🔹 Inclusion of support for the ABC in the campaign policies of all the major political parties. 🔹 Engage ABCFV Groups, members, supporters, and volunteers in campaigning for the ABC 🔹 Build ABCFV’s social media presence and our links to young people 🔹 Raise awareness of the needs of the ABC amongst all voters, with a view to influencing votes. 🔹 Inform voters of the respective positions on the ABC of candidates in selected seats. There's been quite a bit of interest and discussion in my analysis on 'footynomics' this week: https://lnkd.in/gTusZ6sZ. I did a follow-up chat with fellow (round ball) football fan Dom Knight on Night Life on Wednesday https://lnkd.in/gwbCkQbw and I've got a chat coming up on ABC Hunter's Saturday sports program with Bridget Murphy. There's an awful lot of people who want to see a professional football league not only survive but thrive in Australia, but there's also many justifiable questions around how the Australian Professional Leagues has been run since it split away from Football Australia at the end of 2020. Probably the biggest question, though, is can a professional league survive while it is structurally disconnected from the two healthiest parts of the game — the grassroots with 2.1m+ players, and the Matildas and Socceroos? At the moment the A-League seems to scrape by on the corporate philanthropy of some of its owners, the passion of its core fans, the $140 capital injection from Silver Lake, the odd big transfer fee for promising youngsters and a trickle of broadcast revenue from Paramount/Ten. Is that enough for its long-term viability? Instead of seeking capital from US private equity, should the professional game instead seek capital from its supporters in return for a greater say on how their teams are run?

The only thing I'd add to it, as Simon Hill has pointed out, A-League clubs are now earning substantially greater revenues from transfer fees as we export young Australian talent - at least $10m in recent months, potentially as much as $15m if you include a couple of big transfers at the end of last season. Is it a sustainable business model? Maybe, if the A-League can capture a bigger share of the $10-15 billion annual player transfer market.

By now, the news of Gizmodo, Lifehacker and Kotaku closing in Australia will be well known.   I contributed to Lifehacker, on and off, for about a decade and laid down over 3000 stories. I worked with several amazing editors and many very fine journalists. I got to write about almost everything - from making an iPad stand out of LEGO, to enterprise computer software through to my thoughts as a Christian during the same-sex marriage debate (I was all for a YES which led to some hate mail and even the odd veiled death threat). The mergers/acquisitions through Allure to Fairfax to Nine are clearly part of the reason for the demise, as the original mission of those sites was diluted as Kotaku, Lifehacker and Gizmodo moved from one owner to the next. And there's the death of Gawker (the parent company of the three mastheads) which was smashed to pieces when Hulk Hogan lost his shit. I'm sad for the people who lost their jobs yesterday. And I'm sad for the many fine writers who will likely see their legacies consigned to a backup tape somewhere which will eventually be lost when someone moves office. Soon, the local media landscape will be a drab place bereft of diversity and filled with content created either by people with little local understanding or, perhaps even worse, AI-created fluff that will be based on what little original content is left for those tools to scrape/steal. I was lucky to work at a time when good writing, local insight and creativity were in demand. But many of today’s publishers are owned by fund managers who only see cutting costs and boosting profits - not the value a robust media brings through its ability to inform, educate and hold people to account.

Chatter about last night’s episode of Four Corners is all across all my WhatsApp groups today. It was an incredible feat of journalism: frank, fearless, and delivered new and jaw-dropping revelations. For those who claim it’s a beat-up, understand that Four Corners is the pinnacle of public interest journalism in Australia right now, and is resourced as such. Nothing goes to air that isn’t fact checked and validated rigorously. There were a number of bombs: probably the biggest was the fact that Australia has quietly expelled four Indian intelligence officers from Australia, some acting as diplomats. Another was the level of surveillance, even threats, against Australian nationals who advocate for Khalistan, a separate Sikh state. And yet another was the campaign for local political influence by pro-BJP forces within Australia. The fears over India’s activities in Australia has been addressed by many in the know over recent months, sometimes in quiet and coded language, sometimes with frank openness. How these fears are articulated can matter just as much as what is being said. As I’ve written about extensively, India has long been one of the great diplomatic hopes for Australia: a nation of a large and aspiring population ( = market for Australian goods and services), that speaks English, is a democracy, and importantly, speaks the international language of cricket, which all have transcended the potential downsides. But now, the downsides are becoming increasingly apparent. And this is setting up fresh challenges for Australian authorities. How do we manage a partner that is our friend, yet doesn’t always play by the rules? Anyway, watch the Four Corners episode, if you haven’t already. Looking back through clips from my YouTube panel at Kidscreen and found some nuggets of wisdom worthy of resharing. The first is from Emily and relates to how YouTube and other UGC platforms facilitate a test & learn approach that is a sensible way to prove an IP before getting to full pitch. Why? Because broadcasters need surety, and UGC platforms allow creators and IP owners to refine content strategy before taking it to market, or unlocking further investment. Test & learn allows for continuous Improvement. By refining content based on performance data and audience feedback YOU MAKE BETTER STUFF! Test & learn encourages trying new things, leading to unique and engaging content that SERVICES THE NEEDS of the audience, and perhaps in ways you couldn’t have predicted. Look at how Zaria Parvez revolutionised Duolingo’s TikTok. Test & learn helps leverage changing content trends and algorithm updates, and we know how important ALGORITHMIC HEALTH is… Test & learn facilitates greater AUTHENTICITY. There’s the buzzword for Gen Z and A again, but it’s used for a reason. Be fake, and they’ll spot it a mile away. (See again Duolingo TikTok) In basic terms it’s risk management. A test & learn approach on YouTube, TikTok and social gaming helps to derisk investment, be targeted and gives broadcasters and partners less reason to say no. And that’s all we want at the end of the day, is a yes.
