[DATA SCIENCE] My new Practice Project on Predicting Graduate Admission Chances! On Kaggle https://lnkd.in/gmxiA_62 I recently completed a data science project to predict graduate program admission chances based on GRE scores, TOEFL scores, and more. This project was challenging and rewarding, and I'm thrilled to share my learnings and insights with my LinkedIn network. 🔍 Project Overview: Using a comprehensive dataset including GRE Scores, TOEFL Scores, University Rating, SOP Strength, LOR Strength, CGPA, and Research Experience, I built a predictive model to estimate the Chance of Admit. 🛠 Technologies and Tools: - Python: For data manipulation and analysis - Pandas: For data handling and preprocessing - scikit-learn: For building and evaluating the linear regression model 📈 Key Insights: - Data Preprocessing: Handled missing values and normalized data for better model performance - Model Training: Utilized Linear Regression to predict admission chances, achieving: - Mean Absolute Error (MAE): 0.044 - Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE): 7.57% - Mean Squared Error (MSE): 0.004 💡 Challenges and Learnings: One of the key challenges was ensuring the model's accuracy and robustness. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I'm thrilled to share that I won 4th place in the American Express Innovation Labs AI Hackathon 2024 (Singapore)! 🎉 Participating in this competition was an incredible journey filled with learning and innovation. Our team focused on maximizing incremental customer activations for AMEX customers using uplift modeling, a causal inference technique that estimates the true incremental impact of recommendations. Throughout the hackathon, we tackled challenges such as class imbalance, explored various modeling techniques, and implemented the X-Learner method with Random Forest models. I've also published a detailed Medium post about our approach, methodology, and the insights we gained along the way. I am delighted to share that I recently participated in the "Build with AI" event organized by Bill Liu, AICamp and GDG Seattle. During this community-led workshop by Google developers, I had the opportunity to deep dive into the latest trends and products in Generative AI, offered by Google. The event featured insightful tech talks, hands-on workshops, and invaluable networking opportunities: 🎤 Tech talks by industry experts Neelam Pawar, Nikhil Rana, Peter Danenberg and Rabimba Karanjai on Google AI supercomputer architecture, Gemini, Gemma, and Vertex AI. 🔧 Hands-on workshops where I learned how to build AI applications through practical code labs. 🤝 Networking with fellow developers, builders, and industry professionals, exchanging ideas and insights. A special shoutout to the speakers, as well as Google Developers Group, Google Developer Experts, Google Developers North America, Kübra Zengin, Aniedi Udo-Obong and Corinna Luu for the informative sessions and guidance. Bank of America Financial Consumer Complaints Analysis In my current role, I primarily use #Amazon #QuickSight for data visualization, and as a result, I haven't worked with Microsoft Power BI for some time. Over the weekend, I decided to work a project in Microsoft Power BI to solidify my skills. Here are the data cleaning steps I took in Power Query before addressing the problem statements: Data Cleaning Steps : -- Sorted datatypes appropriately. -- Checked for and removed duplicate values. -- Used the Trim function where necessary to clean up text data. -- Utilized the Value and Replace functions for further data transformation. -- Created the required Calculated measures and Columns -- Created an additional Date Table and established relationships in the data model. -- Removed irrelevant columns to streamline the dataset. Problem Statements 1.     Do consumer complaints show any seasonal patterns? 2.     Which products present the most complaints? What are its most common issues? 3.     How are complaints typically resolved? 4.     Can you learn anything from the complaints with untimely responses? Insights Summary: -- Seasonal Patterns: Consumer complaints peak in Q3 and decline significantly in Q4, suggesting seasonal influences. -- Most Complaints by Product: Checking and savings accounts receive the most complaints with issues revolving around account management, while student loans receive the least. -- Complaint Resolutions: 65% of complaints are resolved with explanations, and 0.013% are closed without explanations. -- Untimely Responses: 3.8% of complaints are responded to untimely, with the majority from web complaint sources, cutting across products like checking or savings accounts, credit or prepaid cards, and credit reporting and repair services. [I made a Excel VBA file which helps me play my favorite mobile game better] As many other young people, I have been a big fan of wrestling since I was a little boy. For the record, I used to think wrestling is real LOL, but now I know it's an entertaining sport and all these wrestlers do is just trying to give us a relaxing time after a strenuous day at school or at work. Having watched many wrestling shows, I started to look for a mobile game which can give me that "extreme" wrestling experience and there it is the mobile game called "Wrestling Empire" which I love playing so much that I used to spend a lot of time on it before I realized how mentally unhealthy it is to play games for more than 180 minutes a day 😂 . However, it is still a great game with various modes and continuous-improving in-game features. Among all of which, I find the booking career mode is the funniest one yet the hardest one to play because I have to role-play as a booker in a promotion who have to arrange the matches, contract-dealing with wrestlers, solve wrestler's problems and build up "feuds" among wrestlers which make my wrestling show more compelling. But the problem is I just cannot remember all the feuds I have built up (about 10 pairs of wrestlers) and just messed them up all the time. So, I come up with a VBA file to solve the aforementioned problem. I will never have to remember by myself which wrestlers are being teamed up with or fighting against which, that file will do it for me. In the making of this file, I learned a lot of new VBA programming methods that will help me a lot as a Data-driven professional. I used to think it's a little bit weird to design a VBA file just for gaming purpose, but I came to realize that I will be way more productive if I can combine what I love to do and what I am good at so I just go for it. [Tailoring my cover letter for each job is sometimes not so fun ] For the record, I have been job-searching for 3 months. I have sent out a lot of resumes and cover letter for sure. Since I started this job-searching journey, I knew that modifying the cover letters manually is not a task that I would love to do and I have always wondering if I could somehow partially automate this repetitive boring task with VBA but then I ended up doing nothing. Until yesterday, while revising the lessons from a online VBA course, I came across a section about using VBA to work with different MS applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). After reviewing that lecture, I think it's time to design a VBA file which could help me to autofill specific information into the cover letter with just a mouse click. It's way harder than I thought to build the file but luckily I have Google and StackOverFlow on my side. 😂 If you have faced this problem before, feel free to click on the links below to read the instructions and try it out. I started reading Mathematics for Machine Learning by Marc Peter Deisenroth, A. Aldo Faisal, and Cheng Soon Ong (2020) - Cambridge University Press. (https://mml-book.github.io)  It is one of the study items and I believe it is the most difficult one so far, at least for me, because first it compacts many mathematical abstract concepts in it, second, it has been years since I have studied this subject in university and it's barely familiar, if anything. So I searched for help and found this helpful YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/d3mgN9yF. You would wish you had a teacher like this in highschool or uni. When I started applying for my first data job, 100% of my projects on my resume were simple, copy-paste, and BORING. Do you feel like you need to fill up your resume? I did, and it held me back. You only need one project in your portfolio to stand out. The best way to do that is to find interesting, messy, and impactful data to start your project with. So, I created a short list of resources to help you find just that (all links in comments 💬 ): For Aspiring Data Engineers: Big List of Free and Open Public APIs. This is a great source because you will have to work with APIs which is a significant part of many data engineering jobs. For Aspiring Business/Data Analysts: Texas Covid Data. This is great because you will have to work with messy PDF or excel data which is a huge part of a data analysts job. For Aspiring Analytics Engineers: Rfam MySQL database. This is an open database perfect for building out a dbt pipeline to service analytics on RNA families. For Non-profit focused Analysts: Census Data. There are many APIs here that update regularly and have data on impactful subjects like poverty and issues effecting families/households. #portfolio #dataanalytics #dataengineering
