Me and a couple of partners founded ScoopFindr back in 2021 as an app alternative to the old-school newsletter format...I've worked in tech PR for most of my career, but it was my first time on the other side of the fence--experiencing the "build" process as a tech founder. Full disclosure: It has not been easy! Huge learning curve, especially when it comes to balancing two businesses. In the spirit of the 2024 Community Industry Trends Survey launching, I’ve been perusing some of our past reports. Check out this finding from our 2023 report: only 44% of our survey respondents think their organization will increase their investment in community over the next year, which is down from 62% last year. This is the lowest level of confidence we have seen since we started collecting this data!! I’m curious to know how the sentiment around this is changing, with the industry changing so much in the last year and with AI being in the centre of a lot of conversations... If you’re building a membership community, check out Chief of Staff Network — they’ve been incredibly intentional with narrowing in on the member persona and I think they’ve nailed the community business model too. Something that a lot of professional communities get wrong is they ask members to pay — Chief of staff network helps their members ask their companies to pay. It’s important to have your membership fees tied to a “line item” or a company’s expenses if you’re going to drive meaningful revenue. Great work building a meaningful community (and monetizing it) David, Tom, Rahul, and Scott!

The reinstatement of Net Neutrality regulations got buried under news coverage of the TikTok “ban” bill, but last week’s FCC decision shouldn’t go unnoticed by marketers. Affordable, accessible bandwidth is essential to our business and our clients’ business. The video and tech heavy experiences that have come to define so much of modern PR and marketing rely upon broadband. I’ve long been a proponent of a broadband program similar to the Rural Electrification Act of 1936 (which helped get bypassed Americans on the power grid). While we aren’t there yet, restoring Net Neutrality and looking at broadband through the regulatory lens of public utilities will likely speed infrastructure expansion. To use a railroad metaphor: the fastest train in the world can only run at the speeds its track allows. Comms and PR people can create the most innovative experiences, but they will always be constrained by bandwidth. The more that true broadband coverage is available, the faster our ideas will run. "I already have a communications team." Is there a scientist among them? PR, social media, and UX/UI folx expertly build awareness and, depending on your product, bring consumers to your door. But when it comes to stakeholders -- I'm talking funders, regulators, policymakers, community groups, affiliates, enterprise clients -- they want to dig deeper. To check your math, so to speak. These are the people you create reports, briefs, white papers, and proposals for. The ones who want a sophisticated, persuasive document that show you're worth your salt. The ones whose impression of you will determine the impact your initiative will -- or won't -- have. Don't ask your Marketing Lead to proofread your white paper. She's trained in communications, not science and engineering. She'll do her best. But she'll end up skirting around the technical explanations. Or watering down their robustness. (And honestly, she has enough work already.) Don't miss the chance to make a lasting impression on those all-important stakeholders. Get a Science Interpreter. When you see the results (and the TIME you'll not be spending eeking out a report over the weekend) you'll be glad you did.

A great blogpost here by maestro Rob Meyerson on brand naming and AI. (With a lil snippet from me too.) I'm not anti-AI. I use AI. But only ever as a tool, not as a solution. I'll happily ask ChatGPT for lists of idioms, lists of words with a certain number of syllables, lists of metaphors, or other weird specifications that I decide are worth exploring. And 1% of what I get back makes it worth it if I'm on round three of a tricky brief. Name generation tools could be useful in low risk situations, or to navigate trademark availability. But for larger businesses, it is often a highly political and fragile process of change management which demands a carefully designed journey with stakeholder participation. It's rarely about one founder going, "Yeah, like it!" Thing is, it's not that hard for us humans to think up good names. The hard part is managing the other humans who need to believe in them. What I'm reading now: "Radical Respect: How to Work Together Better," by Kim Scott, provides a roadmap for creating a culture where *everyone* can do the best work of their lives. Kim's first book, "Radical Candor," contains some of the best advice ever on how to become a great manager. This one is kind of a sequel and focuses on building an inclusive, respectful work culture.
