    Poverty Alleviation

I was the club leader at my high school for an organization that works to end poverty in DC. We would go to a local school and help with a food drive or, for instance, we set up a coat drive at our school where students can donate mittens, scarves, hats, coats, etc,. to give to Martha’s Table.

One of the IB requirements is an Extended Essay on an IB subject. I chose to do World Studies where I combined two courses: Biology and English. My topic focused on native language speakers versus foreign language speakers and testing how that influenced the number of words in a scrambled text they were unable to read. I was inspired by this idea when I went to Iran in my junior year and worked with an organization focused on teaching women the fundamentals of education, which included English and Farsi. I tested English and Spanish speakers to see if they were capable of decoding the words in those languages and then looked at the neurological substrates of the brain to understand why they decoded the words as they did. I am proud of this research investigation because it allowed me to delve into one of my main academic interests, neuroscience.
