DISA Expands Thunderdome Zero Trust Program Deployment; Brian Hermann, Quoted. ExecutiveGov discusses the Defense Information Systems Agency's (DISA) expansion of the Thunderdome zero trust program. In 2023, the program was deployed to 15 sites and plans are underway to extend it to 60 more sites in 2024. Learn more here from our training and education partner, DTC Global: https://lnkd.in/ggu3FVcy PS.L2-3.9.1 CR.6.2. NIST SP 800-171 discussion provides guidance for, “Personnel security screening (vetting) activities involve the evaluation/assessment of individual’s conduct, integrity, judgment, loyalty, reliability, and stability (i.e., the trustworthiness of the individual) prior to authorizing access to organizational systems containing CUI”. The screening activities reflect applicable federal laws, Executive Orders, directives, policies, regulations, and specific criteria established for the level of access required for assigned positions. PS.L2-3.9.1[a] Personnel are QUALIFIED for ACCESS when: oIndividual is permitted and not prohibited to access the CUI categories or restricted by markings on document. ACCESS is within the scope of assigned duties. - Individual is screened. PS.L2-3.9.1 - Individual is trained according to CUI Notice 2020-1 and the DoD’s minimum required training. - Completes training for their role-based duties and responsibilities. - Completed training for required for access to any CUI category in the CUI Registry. - Completes NIST required cybersecurity awareness and insider threat training. On May 2nd, the Department of Defense issued a DFARS class deviation relating to the cybersecurity standards required for covered contractor information systems. The intent of this class deviation is to provide industry time for a more deliberate transition upon the release of NIST SP 800-171 Revision 3. Specifically, this class deviation provides an alternative clause that will require contractors that are subject to DFARS clause 252.204-7012 to comply with NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2, instead of the version in effect at the time the solicitation is issued. Cyber Force measure expected to resurface in House defense bill debate. Why it matters: 1. "Why it matters": A proposed bipartisan amendment by the House Armed Services Committee could usher the U.S. military into a new era of battlefronts, this time in digital space. 2. The proposal aims to capitalize on the exponential growth of cyber threats and equip U.S. defense better by creating a dedicated Cyber Force—an initiative that, if successful, would mark the military's second new branch since 2019, following the Space Force. 3. Critics argue that the initiative could detract from existing military cyber efforts, highlighting the major changes facing federal defense strategy. However, if created, the Cyber Force could address the longstanding issue of inadequately trained digital personnel across different military branches, transforming the U.S.'s cybersecurity landscape.
