I enjoyed this podcast from HBR and Barbara Kellerman on bad leadership -- including how to recognize it and what to do about it. She emphasizes many things we teach in #middlepathleadership workshops -- e.g., the importance of #systemsthinking, paying attention to the traps (esp. #knowertrap and #suckerschoice), and integrating #winningandsuccess (a dual-focus on achieving biz outcomes and acting w/ integrity). She encourages us to pay attention, speak up, and act IOT to shift from "bad" leadership to "good" -- to develop systems that attract and support leaders who integrate effectiveness and ethical behavior. #leadershipdevelopment

In this article about empowering #employees through employee #selfservice, UKG explores how self-service for #frontline workers can create a positive employee experience and help attract and retain #talent. While the example cited is a healthcare organization, employee self-service is also particularly valuable to empower front-line workers in #government. These dedicated people deliver essential services in fields like law enforcement, public works, firefighting, public transit, parks and recreation, corrections and other jobs. Most of these folks can’t work remotely, even in a hybrid arrangement, but they also want flexibility. Self-service delivers this by empowering employees to trade shifts, make coverage requests, update #benefits, ask for time off, enroll in #training, and access #payroll and other employee data on their mobile devices. Self-service #technology also benefits #supervisors and #managers. For example, they no longer have to spend time manually assigning shifts only to have to deal later with the frustration of last-minute schedule changes. According to the payroll specialist in the clinic cited in the article, “Our entire mission … is to help others and if you are focused on administrative behind-the-scenes tasks, you are not giving your absolute best to our patients.” It’s easy to substitute “customers” for patients to translate this to the public sector.
