MARTIN GROVE'S FILM FLASHBACK: TOTAL RECALL OPENS 6/1/1990 -- Movie projects usually take years to reach the screen, but TOTAL RECALL's 16 years in development hell is beyond unusual. The 1990 sci-fi action adventure, directed by Paul Verhoeven (ROBOCOP) from a screenplay by Ronald Shusett, Dan O'Bannon and Gary Goldman, starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's based on Philip K. Dick's 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" where a construction worker gets a memory implant about being a secret agent on Mars. It wasn't until 1974 that the 23 page story's movie rights were acquired for $1,000 by Shusett, who then worked with O'Bannon to turn it into TOTAL RECALL. The project bounced around Hollywood for the next 16 years with some 40 screenplay drafts, seven directors and various stars. Shusett & O'Bannon followed up by writing the 1979 sci-fi horror film ALIEN for 20th Century-Fox, which got them a development deal at Disney where they almost got TOTAL made for $20M. But that fell apart because of third act problems with the screenplay. TOTAL's next stop was producer Dino De Laurentiis's DEG (De Laurentiis Entertainment Group) in 1982. Five years later, it was moving towards production there, but unfortunately DEG was also moving -- into bankruptcy. In 1984 DEG signed David Cronenberg (THE FLY) to direct TOTAL, but he also ran into third act snags. Over the next year, Cronenberg wrote 12 more drafts -- but he and Shusett didn't agree about TOTAL's tone. What Shusett & DEG wanted was a kind of "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK GOES TO MARS." Cronenberg preferred a more serious approach like BLADE RUNNER (1982), which was based on Dick's 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" That plus the casting of Richard Dreyfuss as a non-action lead prompted Cronenberg's exit. A few years later, De Laurentiis agreed to let Cronenberg make TOTAL as he originally had in mind, but Cronenberg didn't want to battle again with Shusett. De Laurentiis wanted to hold down TOTAL's budget after his $40M 1984 debacle DUNE. Scrapping the Mars scenes would have helped, but Shusett & O'Bannon refused, which put TOTAL back in the Hollywood deep freeze. Schwarzenegger had liked TOTAL since the mid-'80s, but DEG didn't think he was right to play Quaid. When DEG was winding down, Schwarzenegger got Carolco Pictures, for whom he'd starred in the 1988 action crime comedy RED HEAT, to buy TOTAL for $3M, including development expenses. After buying most of DEG's assets in April 1989, Carolco green lighted TOTAL starring Schwarzenegger with a then huge budget of $65M. Carolco got a blockbuster return on its investment when TOTAL opened June 1, 1990 via TriStar and did $261.3M worldwide. #movies #martingrove #totalrecall

Minecraft is a cultural juggernaut because it keeps reinventing itself and bringing more experiences into its users' hands. For the first time, there is an immersive Minecraft game where you can see yourself as the character. While there have been some adaptations to VR headsets, this new experience is specifically designed from the ground up for an immersive experience. If this is a hit, expect to see many more brands pursue this type of real-life experience. Brand novelty is at an all-time high and will continue to trend that way. https://lnkd.in/eQGvYzFf #licensing #license #brands #deals

SUB MERGE Can a sinking ship pick up speed? In a race to the bottom, it seems so. “The first quarter was the worst ever for pay TV subscriber losses. Even YouTube TV, the only real ‘winner’ thus far in linear video’s dismantling, posted its first-ever quarterly sub loss.” - Craig Moffett, MoffettNathanson LLC https://lnkd.in/eEHrrc7J In Q1 2024, YouTube found out what every other MVPD already knew - the Pay TV biz sucks eggs. As soon as the NFL season ended, a stadium full of YouTube subs (150K) who had bundled NFL Sunday Ticket with YouTube TV, headed for the exits. The MVPD/vMVPD ecosystem lost 12.3% of its customers in Q1. In his report, Craig describes a "Doom Cycle" for MVPDs, in which programming, subscribers, and ad dollars all continue to drain out via the of #PayTV ecosystem, leaving little else but the hull. Sure, NFL Sunday Ticket subs will return to YouTube TV - temporarily, anyway. BUT, with more and more sports headed for streaming (National Basketball Association (NBA), WWE, National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB)) it's very likely cable’s plummet will pick up speed. And (in my own version of Doom Cycle Theory) as those subs swim away to streaming, they will watch and discover less content in overall, which will force a bloody fight over seats on the TV lifeboats for programmers and platforms. Discovery USED to be one of the key benefits of the cable bundle for programmers and audiences. Having run small cable channels and produced small cable shows like Portlandia and Please Like Me, I promise you that discovery has eroded in the latter years of this new streaming-focused era. This is one of the major contributors to a more macro trend - audiences are actually cutting back on the amount of media they use - reducing their total media consumption by 30 minutes per day across video, audio, social, and gaming from 2022 to 2023. https://lnkd.in/egpe9D9f But, hey, at least the band plays on!

Someone made a comment in a post about Luma AI's latest prompt-to-video technology. "Bad news for actors. No more millions of dollars doing nothing." There's a lot to unpack in that comment but I'll focus on a larger question triggered by this comment: "Will we, human audiences, watch virtual humans perform in virtual video?" I personally answer "No." The reason is chemistry. Human performers create chemistry. Here's one example - INSIDE THE NBA. This show with Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and Shaquille O' Neal has long been my go-to sports show. This is not the first sports show ever. There have been many before. There are many now and there will be many after. There were previous versions of the INSIDE THE NBA team with different personalities. But this specific combination of personalities and format just clicked. They have chemistry. I used AI to create my own 4 Man Sports Show. See A in the attached image. But I don't ever think these "guys" will be as watchable as the B team. As AI gets better at making photoreal video with photoreal virtual humans, will AI be able to create virtual performances with that chemistry? Most importantly, would you pay to watch that?

Identifying whether you’re at the WRONG acting studio is crucial for your personal and professional growth AND safety. Here are five signs that suggest you might need to consider finding a new studio: 1. Negative Comments About Competitors: - If the studio owner or staff frequently bad-mouths other acting studios or competitors, it’s a red flag. This behavior indicates insecurity about their own program’s merits. A reputable studio should focus on its strengths rather than disparaging others. 2. Inappropriate Behavior or Advances: - At no time is it appropriate for a studio owner, or coaches to make sexual advances or comments towards or about students, regardless of age. Such actions are a clear abuse of power and indicate a toxic environment. Professional boundaries must always be maintained to ensure a safe and respectful learning space. 3. Mandated Agent Signings: - A studio owner should not dictate which agent you must sign with. While it is beneficial for studios to introduce students to reputable agents, the ultimate decision should be yours. Your career choices should remain in your control, and any pressure to sign with specific agents suggests a conflict of interest. 4. Outrageous Fees: - Be wary of studios that charge exorbitant fees for classes, workshops, or other services. While quality training often comes at a cost, fees should be reasonable and transparent. Excessive charges can indicate that the studio is more interested in profit than providing quality education. 5. Lack of Professional Credentials and Experience: - Ensure the studio owner and instructors have legitimate professional credentials and experience in the industry. If they lack a proven track record or credible background, it might be a sign that the studio is not equipped to provide the quality training needed for your career development. A reputable studio should have experienced professionals who can offer valuable insights and guidance. By keeping these signs in mind, you can better assess whether your current acting studio is the right place for your growth and development as an actor.

🎬 The Art of Harmonizing SFX and Film Scores Read 4 critical tips: In the world of filmmaking, creating a cohesive auditory experience is paramount. Balancing sound effects (SFX) with the film score ensures that neither element overshadows the other, resulting in a harmonious blend that enhances the narrative. Hans Zimmer, a legendary composer known for his immersive soundscapes, highlights the importance of this balance. He explains, “So it starts off with creating that sonic world that I want the tunes or the motifs to live in. And that sonic world very often bleeds over into Richard King, the sound designer’s world” (source: Wallpaper* & The Credits). Here’s how you can achieve this balance in your projects: 1. Early Collaboration: Involve the sound designer and composer from the early stages of production. This fosters a unified vision and allows for seamless integration. 2. Thematic Consistency: Ensure that both SFX and score complement the film’s themes. They should support each other in conveying the story’s emotional and narrative arcs. 3. Dynamic Mixing: Utilize advanced mixing techniques to adjust levels dynamically, allowing the score and SFX to take turns in the spotlight without competing for the audience’s attention. 4. Feedback Loop: Create a continuous feedback loop between the sound team and the director to refine and adjust the audio elements as the film progresses. 💬 Join the Discussion! How do you ensure a perfect balance between SFX and film scores in your projects? Share your experiences and tips in the comments below! 👇 #FilmMaking #SoundDesign #HansZimmer #FilmScore #Collaboration

I've learned the hard way that patience beats FOMO in attending gaming conferences. Rushing to attend can lead to costly mistakes. Here's how indie studios can make smarter decisions. 1. Evaluate the ROI: Before committing to a conference like GDC, analyze the potential return on investment. Will it provide valuable networking, learning opportunities, and exposure for your studio? • Check if the conference offers valuable sessions. • See if there are good networking chances. • Think about how it can help your studio grow. 2. Plan and Budget Ahead: Conferences can be expensive. Set a clear budget covering travel, accommodation, and attendance fees well in advance to avoid last-minute financial stress. • Check to see if there are any scholarships available. Organizations like Indie Game Business or Global Game Jam sometimes provides free tickets. • Set a budget and stick to it. • Book everything early to save money. 3. Prioritize Key Events: Focus on attending the most relevant talks, workshops, and networking events. This helps you get the most out of the conference without feeling overwhelmed. • Pick the sessions that matter most to your studio. • Have a backup plan for full sessions. • Don’t try to do everything; focus on quality. 4. Network Strategically: Most large conferences have services like Meet2Match. Reach out to people online and book a meeting with them ahead of time. Research them beforehand and prepare your pitch to make meaningful connections that can benefit your studio. • Make a list of people you want to meet. • Research them to find common interests. • Prepare a short pitch about your studio. 5. Take Care of Your Team: If you're bringing team members, ensure their well-being is a priority. Encourage breaks, proper rest, and team-building activities to keep everyone motivated and energized. • Schedule breaks and rest times. • Encourage team-building activities. • Keep everyone motivated and happy.

MARTIN GROVE'S FILM FLASHBACK: STAR WARS EPISODE 1 - THE PHANTOM MENACE - 25TH ANNIVERSARY REISSUE OPENS 5/3/2024 -- If you saw STAR WARS in 1977, you likely were jolted a bit 22 years later when it suddenly became the series' fourth episode. That renumbering came when George Lucas answered fans' calls for more STAR WARS movies. Instead of new sequels, he gave them a prequel trilogy -- starting with STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE, which opened May 19, 1999 via 20th Century-Fox and, most recently, had a 25th anniversary reissue May 3, 2024. Written & directed by Lucas, MENACE's stars include Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor & Natalie Portman. Its story precedes the original trilogy by 32 years. Lucas had realized while writing STAR WARS that he had far more story material than would fit into one movie. After his first episode became a global boxoffice phenomenon with $775.4M in ticket sales, Lucas moved forward with two sequels that he didn't want to direct. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980), directed by Irvin Kirschner & written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, did $538.4M globally. RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983), directed by Richard Marquand & written by Lawrence Kasdan and Lucas, did $475.1M globally. For the next 22 years, that was the entire STAR WARS movie universe. By the 1990s, advances in computer generated imagery (CGI) caught Lucas's attention because now visual effects were possible that he couldn't do for the earlier episodes. It also helped that Lucas could now spend whatever it took to achieve his vision on screen. His first three episodes' budgets reportedly were $11M, $18M and $32.5M while reports put MENACE's budget at $115M. News of the prequels surfaced in October 1993 as Lucas was writing MENACE. Years earlier he'd developed enough backstories to make prequels work, which accelerated his writing. Lucas hadn't wanted to write or direct the prequels, but he wasn't able to bring others on board. He asked Kasdan to return to write MENACE, but Kasdan said Lucas, himself, should now resume full creative control of his STAR WARS films. Lucas reportedly also failed to get Frank Darabont (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) to write the script or to hire Carrie Fisher as the project's script doctor. Lucas also went after directors, including Ron Howard, who recalled in November 2015 that he, Robert Zemeckis & Steven Spielberg were all offered to direct MENACE. They all told Lucas he should do it, himself. Fortunately for Lucas, he took their good advice. MENACE grossed $1.03B worldwide. STAR WARS: EPISODE II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES (2002), which Lucas directed & co-wrote (with Jonathan Hales), grossed $653.8M globally. And STAR WARS: EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH (2005), which Lucas directed & wrote, did $868.4M worldwide. #movies #martingrove #starwars

New Turf Removal Program Targets Saving 9 Million Gallons of Water a Year Tucson Water is launching a new conservation incentive program for commercial and multifamily customers to remove non-functional turfgrass and replace it with desert-adapted landscaping. This exciting new program is thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (AZWIFA) with federal American Rescue Plan Act funds allocated by the Arizona State legislature in 2023. Here's an overview of the program that focuses on non-functional or ornamental turfgrass, grass areas not used for recreation: Why target ornamental turfgrass? Examples include grass in front of apartment buildings, around office or industrial complexes, and alongside roads. It’s not used by people or pets and requires lots of watering and maintenance. Replacing that grass with a well-designed landscape of native and desert-adapted plants can provide just as much curb appeal, as well as shade and wildlife habitat, all while using much less water. What’s the goal? We can save 9.2 million gallons of water annually by removing more than 250,000 square feet of ornamental turfgrass over the next two years. The Alliance for Water Efficiency found that replacing turfgrass with desert-adapted landscaping conserves 36 gallons of water per square foot per year. What does the rebate include? Starting July 1, commercial and multifamily Tucson Water customers can qualify for a rebate of $5 per square foot, up to $100,000, by removing non-functional turf and replacing it with low water use plants and trees. Optional incentives are available for incorporating water harvesting basins and native trees into the new design. I’m interested. How do I get started? Reach out to the Conservation team at 520-791-4331 or conservation@tucsonaz.gov. The team will explain the turf removal process and provide a rebate estimate specific to your property. More info in comment section. Commercial & Multi-family Customer Rebates: https://lnkd.in/gjbFtVPP

This is a demo of the third version of my Kodacolor Decoding Software, available as a service at COLORLAB CORPORATION. I have undertaken the process of rewriting the internal software we use here for film scanning and post processing. This is an attempt to clean up the code stack and make things more modular and efficient. This new iteration of my Kodacolor Decoder Software features a seamless one-click decoding process, making it easier than ever to decode Kodacolor films. No other parameters are needed as all the calculations and analyzations have been automated. For those unfamiliar, Eastman Kodak Company Kodacolor is a 16mm black-and-white reversal film with a lenticular array of lenses embossed in the base. Using the filter on the front of the camera and shooting through the base, the color information is recorded spatially as BW densities within each lens. This unique format was introduced by Kodak in 1928 and was made obsolete by the introduction Kodachrome in 1935. One of the key highlights of this version is the significant improvement in efficiency and performance. The software now operates at near real-time on a 14" MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip, ensuring a smooth and efficient decoding experience. For this demo video, we made the leap from screen recording to full-frame video decoding to eliminate heavy aliasing and showcase the software's true capabilities. At Colorlab, we're dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the rich history of motion picture film. This software is another step in our ongoing mission to apply modern technology to provide the most advanced film and video post-production services. hashtag #Colorlab #Kodacolor #Lenticular #FilmPreservation #ColorDecoding #FilmArchives

MARTIN GROVE'S HOLLYWOOD REPORT FOR 6/9/24: BAD put exhibitors in a good mood with a turbo-charged $56M launch that left theatrical naysayers in the dust. Hollywood handicappers originally buzzed that the R rated Sony/Jerry Bruckheimer Films' BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE would drive off with $40-50M and then upped it to $45-50M -- and mid-weekend went to $53M! Sony lowballed expectations with a $30M estimate. Driven by BAD, the weekend marketplace totaled $103.5M, per Comscore, up 54% from the prior weekend and down 38% vs. this time last year. Comscore's year to date tally has 2024 at $2.83B, down 26% from $3.81B in 2023. Last weekend, 2024 was down 24% vs. 2023. BAD hammers home that people haven't stopped moviegoing. When there's something playing they want to see, they show up -- despite high ticket costs, oversized concession prices and inflated related costs like transport, babysitters and dinners out. This bummer summer reflects the retreads, prequels and worn out IP Hollywood tried to get away with. The coming summer weeks should sizzle with Disney/Pixar's INSIDE OUT 2 (6/14), Universal/Illumination Entertainment's DESPICABLE ME 4 (7/3) and Disney/Marvel's DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (7/26). Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: BAD, which reportedly cost $100M to produce, opened to a wildly overperforming $56M at 3,885 theatres ($14,414). Internationally, per Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian, it debuted to "$48.6M for a global opening of $104.6M." BAD's tracking for first choice is best with men over 25 (16 points over norm) and next best with under-25 men (15 points over norm). Women over 25 are 11 points over norm and women under 25 are five points over norm. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes are a blah 64%, but audiences are cheering at 97%. WB/NL's PG-13 horror thriller THE WATCHERS opened #4 to $7M at 3,351 theatres ($2,089). It's the feature directorial debut for Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night Shyamalan, whose thriller TRAP, starring his daughter Saleka Shyamalan, opens 8/9 via WB. WATCHERS' first choice tracking is below norm for all demos. Another amazing release from your friends at SRG-ILS / Virgin / UMG New single, "SO IN LOVE" from music royalty and multi-award winning singer-songwriter-producer and activist, LALAH HATHAWAY. "SO IN LOVE" serves as the official first single release from Lalah Hathaway's forthcoming studio album, "VANTABLACK." "So In Love" can be found on all streaming/download platforms now. The anticipated eighth studio album will be globally released on June 14th, 2024, and is available for pre-orders now, via the Hathaway Entertainment/SRG-ILS Group (Virgin Music Group) label imprint. ‘So In Love’ was written by Philip Beaudreau and I a couple years ago with the intention to pitch it, but we loved it so much and decided to sit with it for a while. I’ve recently added it to my show and it’s one of the most beloved pieces that we perform," shares Lalah. ‘So In Love’ has such a vibe and like a lot of the work i do, it explores some of the more non traditional ideas about love, and self love. The video does this on a grand scale!", she adds. Speaking of the music video, the stunning visuals of the "So In Love" music video will be making its global premiere on BET Soul and BET.com on Thursday, May 9th. As we prepare for the release of VANTABLACK, music lovers abroad will be taken on a magical ride of this new Lalah Hathaway era, as she will be treating them with a new music every other week leading up to the release of VANTABLACK. Lalah Hathaway comments, "VANTABLACK was always the name of the project. The word itself has so much weight on it, I was really unsure of how to approach the idea of writing the song. At the time, what I thought were conflicting perspectives, actually began to shape the concept of not only this album but also how I saw myself. I started reframing how I saw color, in terms of being the blackest I've ever been and even though I'm steeped in who I am, it doesn't exclude the other things that make up the sum of me. Similar to how all the music around me informs the black music that I create. So it's all a melting pot and this song truly exemplifies that."
