I am really concerned with some zipline standards that are still failing to address the momentum and thermodynamics of ziplining. For 22-years our trolley technology has stopped zipliners on steep slopes, some near 45-degrees. We make stopping zipliners look easy. Steep ziplines are our specialty. This zipline video (https://lnkd.in/gHjTDeEu) and many others on my channels utilize our friction-braking technology on a zipline 500 ft tall (platform to landing) and is about 2000 ft long. (At a 30-degree slope, the zipline follows the Olympic Park, Utah, Giant Ski Jump to the bottom.) Our trolleys can be adjusted for temperature changes (not weight of rider) so you can provide safer zipline arrival speeds. With our trolleys, once tuned, you can stop all Zipliners safer, and they all arrive at the same speed. No minimum or maximum weight limits. Although, if 350 lb zipliners are your target, we can customize the trolley and engineer it for greater loads. Even two zipliners at a time. The giant ziplines (over 75 locations world wide) that use my friction-braking technology and my old springs reduce 50% of their zipline accidents. This technology can reduce 50% of the current zipline accidents. Our braking system works! And it is fail-safe (i.e., all our friction-braking trolleys have two brakes)! About a week ago I shared a poll that asked how long we expect our ergonomic product to last - and continue to provide those ergonomic benefits. Most of us voted that we expect the product to last 3-5 years. But I would argue that our expectations are not the reality. Ideally, our product recommendations last as we expect them to, as we can act proactively and address the potential risk factor returning before an incident has occurred. Unfortunately, understanding the product's lifetime, and when risk re-enters the room is a tricky question to answer. Throughout the past year, we have been conducting research to answer this question and validate our ERGO LONGEVITY theory of prolonged ergonomic performance. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing some takeaways from this research and how we can use it to make better decisions as ergonomists. Many safety leaders I speak with are seeking ways to improve their ability to support their organisations to better understand and manage critical risks in real-time. "Edge computing" offers some interesting options worth exploring. Edge computing in very simple terms is when data processing happens closer to where work happens (rather than the processing happening at a data center or back in your head office servers). Examples of edge devices include industrial IoT gateways, smart cameras, ruggedised edge servers, smart watches and some drones. Here’s five ways edge compute enhances real-time risk management: 1. Reduced latency: By processing data closer to its source, edge computing minimises the time required for data to travel to and from a central server - so you can get insights immediately in the field. 2. Bandwidth optimisation: Edge compute reduces the amount of data that needs to be transmitted over networks, alleviating congestion and improving efficiency - this is great for in-field video collaboration about key risk controls. 3. Real-time processing: Edge computing enables faster analysis and response times for time-sensitive applications, such as autonomous vehicles or industrial IoT devices - this means quick action when dynamic risks are interacting. 4. Improved reliability: By distributing computing resources, edge computing can continue to function even if there are network disruptions. In reality this means improved user experience which = improved engagement with systems. 5. Enhanced privacy and security: Sensitive data can be processed locally, reducing the risk of exposure during transmission - great for fatigue monitoring, personalised data etc. Understanding edge computing (which realistically encompasses a bunch of different technologies) is one of the foundational digital literacy topics for modern safety professionals to understand and leverage. What’s the Difference? Fall Arrest Systems are designed to stop a fall that's already occurring. They’re your safety net, featuring components like body harnesses, lanyards, anchor points, and deceleration devices that activate in the event of a fall, safely stopping the worker before they hit the ground. Fall Restraint Systems, on the other hand, prevent falls from happening. These systems involve tying a worker to a secure anchor point with equipment such as a tether or body belt that physically prevents them from reaching a point where they could fall. Highly Alarming: Risk Factors while exposure to Heat.... HEAT STRESS: Workers who are exposed to extreme heat or work in hot environments may be at risk of heat stress. Exposure to extreme heat can result in occupational illnesses and injuries. Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Heat can also increase the risk of injuries in workers as it may result in sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, and dizziness. Burns may also occur as a result of accidental contact with hot surfaces or steam. Workers at risk of heat stress include outdoor workers and workers in hot environments such as firefighters, bakery workers, farmers, construction workers, miners, boiler room workers, factory workers, and others. Workers at greater risk of heat stress include those who are 65 years of age or older, are overweight, have heart disease or high blood pressure, or take medications that may be affected by extreme heat. Prevention of heat stress in workers is important. Employers should provide training to workers so they understand what heat stress is, how it affects their health and safety, and how it can be prevented (NIOSH).
