May is #lupusawarenessmonth and also awareness month for several other hidden, chronic disabilities. May 10 is #putonpurpleforlupus day. Join me in wearing purple on May 10! My daughters and I all have Lupus and while there is a genetic tie, we know of no one in our family with it. Mine was found at 19 (with symptoms back to at least 9) and my girls at 11 and 13. We've often been told we can't do things and there are some things we can't do. But if it holds us back from anything, then we were not meant to go there. We're 3 educated, talented, and ambitious women with a built in governor. From posts on here, I've seen a lot of people with their own struggles and challenges. And I've received many private messages from those who don't wish to be public due mainly to a fear of discrimination in employment. That's a sad world, but those with disabilities or differences have lived / are living it, too. Just know, you're not in it alone and there are probably a lot more people who get it than you realize. So let's take this month to raise awareness for #hiddendisabilities, but every day recognize that there are colleagues, loved ones, coworkers, opponents, and strangers who may be facing challenges you can't see, but that might be driving their reaction or state of being. Bravery isn't the absence of fear; it's the strength to be honest and take action. My life was a masquerade for a long time, hiding my fears and insecurities behind a veil of false confidence. I grappled with a deep-seated sense of unworthiness, letting fear dictate my choices and cloud my vision. This constant battle with self-doubt made me question my worth at every turn, trapping me in a cycle of inaction. But the day came when I realised that true bravery lies in acknowledging these fears, not denying them. I started confronting my insecurities head-on, embracing them as part of my human experience. "No one wants to work anymore!" This recent meme from Safety Knights ♞ has me thinking... When was the last time you took a critical look at your organization's hiring and onboarding practices? First impressions are a big deal, and when you bring on a new employee, part of the first impression should include a focus on workplace safety. If an employee perceives their safety is not a priority of the organization on day 1, what impact could this have down the road? Some recent observations: - An employee brings up a valid safety concern, the concern is waved off by the supervisor, and the employee is labeled a problem and as not wanting to work. - An employee is injured and does not know who to inform or where to go for medical treatment, so they seek treatment after work hours with their provider or the emergency room. - An employee observes the same unsafe condition or activity for a week, with no corrections made by more senior employees who work in the same area. They look for other jobs during break and do not report the unsafe area because it appears no one cares anyway. Human connection and communication is complex, but we can communicate safety in easy and quick ways on day 1, week 1, and beyond for our new employees. Small changes in communication could have changed a lot about the three examples listed above. Take a critical look at how your organization would handle these situations. Safety professionals can lead the way in human connection and improved communication about safety - we have to, because people want to work, safely.

The two most important elements of communication are: 1. Honesty 2. Respect Do you want others to be honest with you? Then be honest. Do you want your coworkers to engage with you respectfully? Then be respectful. Master honesty and respect. Be an example to others. And watch healthy communication in your organization skyrocket.
