Join us on June 19th for our June Lunch Program on the Truxel Bridge Concept and Feasibility Study featuring City of Sacramento Principal Planner Fedolia "Sparky" Harris and Dokken Engineering Senior Engineer Pamela Dalcin-Walling. Register Here: https://lnkd.in/gG9pM5tU The City of Sacramento is undertaking an engineering feasibility study for a new multi-modal bridge across the lower American River between Truxel Road and Sequoia Pacific Boulevard to better connect North and South Natomas with the Central City. Limitations associated with the existing crossings discourage walking, biking, and transit resulting in higher greenhouse gas emissions, higher vehicle miles traveled (VMT) due to longer trips, less efficient transit routing, and reduced public health and air quality. This limited connectivity also leads to longer emergency response times and can hinder evacuation routes. The purpose of the study is to refine the adopted alternative for the new bridge by conducting an inclusive public outreach and engagement process in collaboration with detailed engineering and environmental analysis.

We're thrilled to announce that Anthony Cataldo, AIA, LEED AP is featured in Bisnow! After speaking at Bisnow’s SOCAL Industrial Conference, Anthony was invited to share his insights on California’s new building code aimed at reducing embodied carbon. This amendment, effective July 1, marks a significant step towards net-zero goals. As Anthony says, "My guess is California did this because they want to get us starting to look at carbon and being accountable, ultimately, for the embodied carbon that our buildings are producing," Lowney Architecture Chief Operating Officer Anthony Cataldo said. "When the building code is updated a year and a half down the road, they’ll start to turn up the heat." Read more about this pivotal change and its impact on construction and development in the full article on Bisnow. #LowneyArchitecture #SustainableBuilding #EmbodiedCarbon #GreenConstruction #NetZero #BISNOW #IndustrialDesign #CaliforniaBuildingCode

ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions - US
Effective July 1, 2024, the California Green Building Standards Code, known as CALGreen, has mandatory embodied carbon requirements commencing for public and private non-residential buildings larger than 100,000 square feet and schools larger than 50,000 square feet. This means the Carbon Leadership Forum is collecting whole building life cycle assessment (WBLCA) results conducted for compliance with CALGreen to inform future policy development. ASSA ABLOY has a complete mapping of more than 250 environmental product declarations (EPDs), which note their environmental footprint and detail their LCA (Lifecycle Assessment), independently verified by an accredited 3rd party. Read about the key benefits of certified products and see the library of ASSA ABLOY EPD’s here: https://bit.ly/3QXW57j #ASSAABLOY #security #securitysolutions #AllIn #sustainability #environmentalproductdeclarations #greenbuildings

What seems like an anomaly, could send ripples through Cali Counties that possess high DIFs. Developer Impact Fees are just one of many costs associated with keeping #affordablehousing costs per unit elevated. However, DIFs have been a reason for not significantly (and regularly) raising property taxes.

As a board member for Passive House California, I helped man the booth yesterday (along with Tracy Blair, Christian Kienapfel & Cyril Petit) at the USGBC held at The Beehive by SoLa. I appreciated that they didn't use single use cups/plates, offering water filling stations and recycling bins throughout. There were many great vendors and non-profits that I'll be studying up on in the coming weeks. We got the word out about PH standards. 1. Climate specific insulation (if you don't think we need insulation in California, I'll share my own experience on it) 2. Thermal bridge free construction 3. Airtight enclosure (which also means water and smoke tight) 4. High performance windows/doors 5. Hygienic ventilation with heat recovery and no recirculation of air (especially great for those with allergies) #interiordesigner #passivehousestandard #greenbuilding #greenmeanshealthier #walkthetalk

I write letters to colleagues, friends, and past clients about my work. Here is a write-up on sustainability that I wanted to share with the LI community: --- Sustainability is the foundation of my practice having spent most of my career working on some of the biggest, public projects in Southern California. This is a market where progressive public opinion governs alongside some of the most energy-stringent building code in the world. Today, I strive to apply these best practices learned to all my projects; regardless of location, budget, and client. And now thanks to current International Building Code, it is practically a prerequisite that architects and owners deliver energy-efficient buildings. This is a victory that should be celebrated and continued. Now, let's get a bit more real. The truth is that a large part of the construction industry continues to operate focused on the excessive exploitation of raw, virgin land. For many decades, we have replaced our natural ecosystem with a thoughtless expansion of non-descript buildings, industrial processing, and vehicle infrastructure placed solely in the interest of money and utility. I believe this phenomena to be a driving force in waste, pollution, and inefficiency — the antithesis of sustainability. Given the context that I have just described, I find myself recalibrating my focus as it relates to sustainable building design to consider the value of more intangible criteria. I realize we are in the midst of an environmental crisis not because of the building process itself, but because of the way in which we choose to build: what, where and why. Unlike current progressive industry trends in regards to sustainability, I am not fearful using carbon-intensive materials such as concrete or plastics. Instead, priority should be given to design buildings of lasting value — the idea is that those who inhabit it, will care enough to preserve and protect what was spent to develop it. In part, I’m advocating for a sustainable philosophy in life. This seems less idealistic than believing that the carbon footprint of the buildings we create will move the needle. --- What do you think about using carbon-intensive materials in design and construction? Plastic is actually an amazing material. The Denver Airport roof canopy is outfitted in plastic (ETFE), it is adorned by millions, and I suspect that that building will be protected and used for centuries to come. #sustanability #nocheapbuildings #lifecycle #design #architecture #construction

Embodied Carbon Nonsense - Shame on the AIA The new embodied carbon requirements being required by the upcoming interim CalGreen Code change is another example of the insanity of the "green" industry. I have been in the building engineering and design industry in California for 40 years. The California Energy Commission is completely out of touch with the industry. It keeps allowing this insane green building movement to force unproven increases in design and construction costs on an industry that is so overloaded with regulation that no building in California can ever meet every single code requirement. Half the building departments in the state don't even enforce the CalGreen Code. They never even look at the issues during permitting and construction - because they don't have the funding and staff to deal with non-life safety issues. Without enforcement, there is no compliance. What the CEC needs to do is take 80% of the money they are passing thru to plethora of "green consultants" and give it to the 528 building jurisdictions in the state. Maybe then, they can have the staff and budget to enforce the current CalGreen Code requirements. The building code requirements need to have critical oversight. Currently there is no such thing. It's just a group of green consultants, architects who want to promote themselves, and green vendors who are involved to promote their products. There is zero critical analysis. All members perpetuate their own positions by pushing ever more "green" requirements on the industry. The way the California Green Building Code adoption process has spawned a massive industry built on self-promotion is not fair to the building industry as a whole. Unfortunately, the CEC has no over-sight, and no one is actually in charge. There is no one to stand up and say, "Has anyone, at all, really looked at the basis for this proposed new requirement critically? Really critically? Or have we simply taken the data provided by self-promoting green consultants at face value?" No one is watching the CEC henhouse and it's created a code nightmare that has grown out of all proportion to any kind of common sense. No engineer, no architect, no building department official in the state can possibly keep up with this massive pandora's box of ever expanding requirements. At some point, I hope the state legislature will step in and provide over-sight and control over the CEC. It is sorely needed. I also think that the AIA needs to do a better job of standing up for it's clients by pushing back on government-promoted issues which do not benefit the people who are paying their bills - building owners and developers. The next time your client asks why his building costs so much just tell them the truth - because you and your organization promote the ever-increasing code changes and costs!

Especially when it comes to the cost of working with an architect or structural designer in locations like Malibu and Maui, there’s a common misconception that hiring a top contractor or architecture firm is a waste of money. The reality is that working with a reputable architecture firm can actually save you money in the long run. Here’s how. 👉 https://lttr.ai/ASX48
