Advice for #UX job seekers: Do NOT "spray and pray." It doesn't work. To wit: Every day I get at least 10 connection requests where the person blasts me with a list of what they do and the job they want; its the equivalent of "Hi. I do UX. Hire me." Here are the two big problems with that approach and why, if you do this, you should stop: 1. I am an independent UX consultant; I don’t hire anyone. So not only will pitching me here not help you, it also SCREAMS to me that you don’t really know who I am or what I do. That doesn’t hurt you here because, again, I don’t hire — but if you make the same mistake with a potential employer, they’ll get the same impression. And not only will they ignore you, they’ll talk about you to their colleagues. Moral of the story: pitch your abilities or resume in a way specific to that company and the positions you KNOW they actually have open. This approach you’re taking now — sending the same generic, impersonal bullshit to every possible employer — will only hurt you. 2. Don’t ever just paste your credentials like this. It gives the impression you’re doing it to every person you meet. It also communicates that the only reason you requested a connection is to further your own career, which comes across as very selfish. Instead, take the time to write something that makes the person feel like you really want to work with THEM and them alone. Talk to people like they’re people. Make it a point to communiciate the fact that you know what they do, whrere they work, what kind of work they do. Explain WHY all of that is of interest to you and why you wnat to work with them. Be specific, be clear and treat them with RESPECT in those communications. YES, that's a lot of work. YES, you must do it. There are no shortcuts. #UXcareer #UXjobs #ProductDesign

Due to recent encounters with scammers and other unreliable or unverified job listings, could you please provide the following information prior to moving forward in this process. 1-Has this position been approved by the hiring manager's company and/or this company's Human Resources? (i.e. what's the requisition number or req id?) 2-Pay rate? 3-Hard start date? 4-Number of rounds of interviews? 5-Required "skills assessment" or "test projects"? Please let me know. Thank you, __________ " Job Seekers : NEVER AGREE TO DO FREE WORK (or what recruiters / job posters label as "skills assessments" or "practice projects". know your worth and value your time. Recruiters : NEVER ASK/REQUIRE FREE WORK as a requirement of the interview process. It's just wrong and there is no guarantee of moving forward. 🙏🏻👍🏻🤝

This is for companies hiring Talent Acquisition/Recruitment professionals. I would like you to consider interviewing candidates outside of your industry. Just be open. Most recruiters will have no problem understanding the nuances of a new industry. Heck, I have learned new industries. DoD, SaaS, FinTech, Access Control, Digital Advertising. My degree is in History. Zero experience in tech, but somehow I was able to hire people in almost every single discipline. Healthcare companies, I am talking to you, in particular. Do you think we cannot apply our principles and skills to new positions? That is a huge component of what we do, we read resume's and screen candidates by asking questions and doing research on what they do. Think about this, you might hire someone coming in with fresh ideas, methods, and techniques that you might otherwise not see intra-industry. Now a field expert is an expert, I cannot and will not count that out. It's cool to have a specialization. However, diversity in history and experience might be the flavor you need in your TA team. Grow your team with aptitude, capabilities, skills, drive, energy, and experience rather than growing inside your industry from your competitors. We TA professionals are the most versatile human's on Earth. We meet strangers with completely different skillsets all day long and learn about them. Recruiters, agree or disagree?

It's not always what you lack, but sometimes it's about the candidate they chose: - Someone who previously worked for the company and is returning. - An internal candidate who has been patiently waiting for this opportunity. - Someone with more experience, a broader skillset, or more leadership experience. JOB SEARCH HACK TO BE IN THE TOP 10-20% OF APPLICANTS! Y'all what if I told you there was a cheat code to being in the top percentage of applicants for a job? Might want to sit down for this one. Apply to roles you are 100%+ qualified for. Yes. 100% PLUS. Let me explain - in particular for OFCCP compliant companies, those Basic Qualifications are NOT NEGOTIABLE. You MUST meet 100% of them. MOST companies want folks who meet as much as possible and ideally are separating the must haves from the nice to haves. I'm still shooting for as many as possible AND certainly the ones that are measurable, role related, and realistic. Yes, companies have a responsibility to write realistic job descriptions (I address this in the video below). "But Ames, I've applied to roles I met all the qualifications for and didn't even get an interview!" I believe you. And I feel your frustration. It's not unheard of for me to present 10 well qualified (yes, 100%+) candidates to my hiring teams, but they have to make tough calls on where to spend their time. They may only be able to interview the top 5. So sadly, ESPECIALLY in this market, it's not unheard of for WELL QUALIFIED CANDIDATES to not get an interview. Every recruiter I know has confirmed over and over when it comes to direct applicants, we see roughly 10-20% (MAYBE 25%) of them are actually a fit. I get it. We're frustrated, tired, scared, and just trying to land a damn job in this dumpster fire of an economy. Y'all mean to tell me the "solution" is to apply to roles you're NOT qualified for? Because some ding dong claims you'll be BORED? On my life anyone who says that with a straight face is either confused or selling you something. I guarantee it. I've been tracking this data for YEARS. As an actual working recruiter I have the data to back up everything I advise y'all to do - for free. DATA DON'T LIE You are entitled to follow whatever thought leaders float your boat and spend your hard earned money however you like. Falling into the dopamine trap set by folks cosplaying as serious career coaches is not how I prefer to spend MY time. But to each their own. I am well aware that folks are going to argue with me in the comments. Your personal lived experience is your own. Good for you if you're one of the few exceptions. Argue with your ego, not with me. Designers, be careful of job descriptions that claim the role is “part-time” or “only 20-25 hours a week.” This is just a way for companies to pay you less than you’re worth. Their expectations will still be that you deliver a full-time workload… they’re just only willing to pay you for half of that time. Know your worth and don’t settle for less.

PSA to Designers: Don’t trash other designers’ work, especially if you’re working on an update to said work. It just makes YOU look bad. Instead, say things like: ✅ We learned a ton and know we know how to make it better. ✅ We needed to modernize it. ✅ The needs turned out to be more complicated in the field than expected. ✅ The new features don’t fit into the IA. ✅ We’re rebranding and need a more cohesive visual language. Navigating a graduate job has been a disheartening experience, I haven’t heard from ONE role I’ve applied for through LinkedIn, yet the same jobs are posted and promoted for weeks on end, I’ve been ghosted mid applications, interviews with no feedback, I try and connect and network with recruiters? No luck, it seems there’s a lack of entry level roles/design internships & when you’re all out of options - Nobody has time for unpaid work experience to make me a better applicant, Everyday I’m still trying but I’d be lying if I haven’t felt disheartened recently.
