We are excited to share the latest #BioBrace peer-reviewed publication released in #AJSM, “Augmented Ulnar Collateral Ligament Repair with Structural Bioinductive Scaffold: A Biomechanical Study” by Kenneth M. Lin, MD et al. This study highlights the biomechanical benefits of BioBrace augmented UCL repair vs. UCL repair alone. The authors also discuss the concerns about overconstraint or stress shielding with nonabsorbable suture tape. Blue Arbor Technologies, Inc. has just received #FDA breakthrough device designation for its Restore neuromuscular interface system 🧠 The FDA has also accepted the system into its Total Product Life Cycle (TPLC) Advisory Program (TAP) Pilot. 💪 The Michigan-based team designed its "Restore" system to integrate into the peripheral nervous system alongside robotic prosthetics seamlessly. 🤖 They want to restore naturalistic hand and arm function for patients with upper limb loss. With their platform, patients could potentially manoeuvre upper limb prosthetic devices with enhanced dexterity, speed, and reliability. 👏 It features implantable intramuscular electrodes, a sensing unit, a socket-mounted receiver, and a comprehensive software package. The sensing unit filters, conditions, and processes patient-generated electromyographic (EMG) signals, transmitting them wirelessly to a socket-mounted receiver. From there, the receiver decodes the signals into precise movement commands for the prosthesis, all controlled by the software. 💻 President of Blue Arbor Paul S. The question came up: "Bob, how do you demo TrueMargin?" Demonstrating a new medical device at a conference is no easy task. The Emet Surgical team initially developed models and “claymations” (3D animations like Gumby) to showcase TrueMargin’s features and functions. While these methods garnered interest and good leads, they lacked the hands-on experience that truly connects doctors to the product. It's like buying a car without a test drive. We needed a way to draw visitors into our booth and give them a test drive experience. We considered purchasing human and animal cadaver body parts, commonly used in medical schools, but they were too expensive and impractical. Then, a few months ago, we found the perfect material right in my fridge: chicken breasts. We first used chicken breasts in our demos at the American Society of Breast Surgeons Annual Meeting in April. Within minutes of the exhibition opening, surgeons were putting on gloves, picking up instruments, and getting a hands-on TrueMargin experience. It was a hit! At around $3 per demo, it was an affordable and effective solution, making me a very happy CEO. Since then, we’ve used chicken breasts for demos at the US and Canadian Academy of Pathologists conference, and last week at Biomed Israel 2024, where we performed over 40 live demonstrations each day. This reminds me of my first CEO experience during the early dot-com era. At Comdex, the predecessor to CES, company logo T-shirts were the booth draw. T-shirts cost around $4 each, a stretch for our budget. When we found boxer shorts for just $2.50. We decided to try them out. The result was longer lines at our booth than at Oracle’s, which was right across from us, and leads from Ford and GE that we closed a few months later. Emet Surgical is, as they say, punching above our weight class. Just as TrueMargin is a clever solution to a long-standing problem, with every aspect of our business we must be creative and resourceful to achieve our goals. Our current funding round is ending soon. Now is the time to get a piece of Emet Surgical and join us on this fantastic journey.

A recent femur fracture product launched and it touted 34 years of innovation leading to the latest design. What stood out to me was that this 'new' design was a series of cylindrical titanium rods with several options for screws above and below the fracture and the associated screw targeting jig. I feel like I've seen essentially the same design for 20 years. Upon some exploration, it seems a lot of designs and materials have been explored in the last few decades...and centuries. As with most orthopedic devices, there's a progression from wood sticks to ivory and then to aluminum, silver, steel, stainless and eventually titanium(1). More recent designs have tried carbon fiber, anti-infective and anti-microbial coatings - it looks unlikely that these will have a lasting impact(2). I did find it interesting that several non-circular cross sections were part of some early designs(1). Some of these look frightening while others make me curious about what is possible with contemporary materials and manufacturing methods. Magnetic screw targeting is an interesting ideal to solve a real problem(4). Claws that protrude from the nail has been tried a lot of different ways and I suspect that pursuit will continue(3). Similarly, limb lengthening nails, radially expanding nails or expanding locking features have been concepts for as long as 80 years and I'm not sure anyone has it right yet. Here we go: - Customer requirement: "less invasive long bone fracture fixation with locking above and below the fracture and geometry that accommodates anatomy and surgical approach" - Design input: "intramedullary device that is flexible and strong and has simple fixation that is not a screw (and is inexpensive, easy to manufacture, fits in one tray)" 😐 sounds simple, right? A new implant chip technology build by our team at UCLA Integrated Sensors Laboratory uses a single antenna to harvest power and communicate back at the same frequency with the ability to scale data-rate versus distance dynamically. This wireless and battery-less chip archives 50kbps at 70mm and 1kbps at 200mm distance.
