I just read an interesting article from Novi Labs that discusses the complexities of finding positive correlations between extending lateral oil and gas wells and increased production. The first thing that came to mind was how analyzing tubing pressure could yield further insights. Specifically, does the increase in well length affect downhole pressures? One might assume that it increases. However, that's not always the case. I'm particularly interested in the psi data during production (as the well is flowing) in relationship or comparison between shorter laterals vs longer. Can production correlations be found there? There are many other factors to consider as well, line pressure, frack type, choke, etc. Insightful article none the less. That is unless one is inclined to dive deeper to understand the decision maker behind the deal. Reese Energy Consulting today has done just that to feature a fearless, larger-than-life Texas wildcatter billionaire behind the wheel of his 35-year-old company who continues to bet big beyond the border. REC today is following the latest news from Lewis Energy Group (LEG), one of South Texas’ largest gas producers. No secret to folks in the Eagle Ford, the San Antonio-based LEG has never been content to limit the geography of its oil and gas thrill-seeking. Those decisions would fall to its leader, Rod Lewis—coined by Forbes as the “only gringo allowed to drill in Mexico”—who became the first U.S. producer to sign a contract with PEMEX in 2004. And more (ad)ventures lay ahead to include natural gas operations off the coast of Colombia and now Lewis’s latest cold plunge into politically-turmoiled Venezuela with a PDVSA deal to rehab five oilfields in decline—two of which currently produce 3 MBPD. The Biden administration on April 17 ended a sanctions waiver on Venezuelan oil. Lewis and his latest mission to build Latin America’s next energy platform are equally fascinating. Born in the border town of Laredo, Lewis launched his company in 1983 with a single gas well in South Texas and a hellbent ethos to control his own destiny. Over 35 years, he’s proved a quintuple threat stateside with the whole wellhead-to-market enchilada that includes a fleet of drilling rigs, oilfield services, saltwater disposal, end-to-end midstream services, and commodity marketing. Lewis also happens to own the nation’s largest collection of air-worthy WWII fighter planes. What do you think? What is straining the Texas grid? The oil and gas industry is switching from its own products (hydrocarbons) to grid electricity (a lot of renewables). Why? Cheaper. "The Permian Basin alone is expected to see 24 gigawatts of added power demand, about half from electrification of oil and gas operations and half from data centers and cryptocurrency mines, ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas told lawmakers." Using Texas power to produce oil and gas to export. Just like they are using up TX freshwater to produce oil for export. Transitioning off of fossil fuels will save a lot of water, power and fuel for shipping. https://lnkd.in/eBGcSkzJ

U.S. oil and gas production shatters records in 2024 1. Not the Middle East, the U.S. is now the biggest producer of oil in the world 2. The U.S. oil production grew 1.4% higher than last year 3. The average U.S. oil production in 2023 stood at 2.93 million barrels per day (BPD) 4. The same production output increased by 7.1% in 2024 to 13.12 million bpd 5. 🚨 Key takeaways from the IEF Oil and Gas Investment Report 🚨 1) Annual upstream investment grew by 12% in 2023 and is projected to increase by 5% in 2024, reaching $603 billion. This marks a significant rebound, doubling the low levels of 2020. North and South America accounted for over half of the increase in capex since 2022, with Latin America driving growth in 2024 for the first time in decades. 2) To ensure adequate supplies, annual upstream investment must rise by $135 billion to reach $738 billion by 2030, totaling $4.3 trillion between 2025 and 2030. Despite geopolitical tensions and sanctions, production in Russia, Iran, and Venezuela has remained resilient, with non-OPEC supply exceeding expectations. 3) Oil and gas companies are increasingly investing in decarbonizing operations, including methane abatement, flaring reduction, and CCUS. While the risk of underinvestment has decreased due to elevated prices and eased capital constraints, it remains a concern if commodity prices fall or geopolitical risks intensify. 4) While the increase in upstream investment is critical for ensuring energy security and meeting future demand, it raises important questions about its alignment with global Net Zero targets. The projected $738 billion annual investment needed by 2030 to sustain oil and gas supplies could potentially conflict with the aggressive decarbonization goals set by many countries. 5) The IEF report indicates that despite the industry's efforts to decarbonize operations—such as investments in methane abatement and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS)—the majority of new supply is still geared towards traditional fossil fuels. This includes substantial projects in North America, Latin America, and other regions where conventional crude production remains a key focus. With global conventional crude production expected to fall by over 20% by 2035 without additional drilling, the continued heavy investment in upstream oil and gas raises concerns about the feasibility of achieving significant reductions in carbon emissions. 6) Moreover, while the industry is seeing increased efficiencies and the ability to produce new supplies at under $60 per barrel of Brent, the reliance on fossil fuel production remains high. This dynamic is at odds with the IEA's Net Zero by 2050 roadmap, which requires a significant reduction in fossil fuel use and a rapid scale-up of renewable energy sources. ⚠️ The challenge will be balancing the immediate need for energy security with long-term sustainability goals, ensuring that investments today do not lock in high carbon emissions for decades to come. #energytransitions #oil #natgas #supply #demand #opec #nonopec #us #shale #climatechange

Here is an excellent data driven analysis of the impacts of renewables (or the apparent lack thereof) on power generation through weather-induced critical demand periods in Texas this week. This debate of "us vs them" needs to end. The world is electrifying however we neither have the luxury of allowing (nor can we afford to allow) policy-makers to pick and choose the winners in the power generation stack. All fuels are needed, full stop. Renewables play an important and meaningful role when the system is under normal load, but I'll be damned if I'm willing to roll the dice that they can get us through the most critical demand periods. Let's start electing leaders who understand this, or are at least willing to listen to those who do and finally see logic and common sense prevail. All energy matters, not just those "preferred" by unrealistic policy-makers. Doug Sheridan David A. M.
