The study informs individuals and employers considering certification for professional development and goal setting, while demonstrating both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Considerations for future learning formats, including digital badging and micro-credentialing, are offered.

Dr. Petrillo is the 42nd recipient of the ASAE Professional Performance Award, which recognizes invaluable contributions made by senior executives who are at the top level of their organizations but are not yet CEOs. At the time of the award, Petrillo was vice-chair of the CAE Commission and served as chair of the Assessments Task Force and the ASAE Foundation's Knowledge Management Research Task Force. She earned her certified association executive (CAE) credential in 2007.
