“I have the pleasure of working with Dr. Tracy Brower as an Integrator partner to Steelcase. Over the past few years we have connected on a variety of topics including culture in the workplace, wellbeing, happiness and grit, being resilient and choosing joy. Tracy is a sincere, intelligent, accomplished sociologist and writer studying work life fulfillment and happiness. She is a true inspiration! In her latest book, The Secrets to Happiness at Work, Tracy writes “joy and a deep sense of happiness are yours for the taking. Far from something you must wait for or something that may only be achieved by a few lucky people, joy is something you can embrace, and happiness is something you can accomplish. Be intentional.” This is a strong message that shares our opportunity to create our own joy. Other key points that resonated with me in this inspirational read: ✅ Don’t let work-life balance get in your way or weigh you down. ✅ Keep perspective, be mindful, be optimistic, and realize you can cultivate joyful experiences. ✅ Be selective about the company you choose. ✅ Recognize the impacts of social media, and use it to facilitate connection without letting it control you. ✅ Embrace the power of empathy in building relationships, and balance your time working with others and working alone. ✅ Seek opportunities to stretch and say yes more than you say no. ✅ Learn from failure, leverage stress, and know that growth and learning contribute to your joy. ✅ Find ways to play and reject hustle culture. ✅ Know went to disconnect and went to pursue your goals with fever. ✅ Create boundaries and dream small as you make your work as meaningful as it can be. ✅ Joy is within your grasp. You can create it, cultivate it, and choose it. I am truly inspired by this book and all of Tracy’s articles. Each provides perspective in a simple way allowing you to reflect on your work life integration and the power each of us have to choose happiness and joy in our lives. ”

What do you do if your entrepreneurial journey is filled with obstacles?
If you're encountering obstacles, you can use them to your advantage. First, they may be a good signal that you're stretching and innovating. If you don't encounter obstacles, it can mean that you're not pushing far enough. And then of course obstacles are a huge opportunity to learn, improve, adjust and adapt--to develop resilience. Stay aware of your market and your circumstances, make sense of how they're uniquely important and then respond. Developing these skills will help you achieve initial success, and ensure you can continue evolving with your entrepreneurial idea as you move forward.
