𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐔𝐃𝐈𝐓 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐀𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓! This week, Ed in Merced spoke with a colleague who doesn’t use a 3-tier ranking of internal audit findings in audit reports. Ed was very surprised. He thought everyone used a 3-tier system. So he asked the Audit Explainer. TAE agreed that 3-tier systems are common. But, they aren’t necessarily the best option. There are problems with any type of ranking system. And, TAE suggests, they may not really be all that helpful.  It’s best if you read Ed’s letter and TAE’s response. If you're not asking yourself this one question - you should be... Whether you're a CEO or a uni student, everyone is asking themselves "what skills do I need to future-proof myself amidst this unprecedented technological change".   In this final installment of the series, I share in my opinion the core future skills of the accountant (irrespective of what tech comes our way):   1. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: e.g. use stories / metaphors / diagrams to convey complex insights, build rapport, practice presentation skills.   🌐 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗼 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁   - What (Historical): Accountants crunched numbers, prepared financial statements, and ensured compliance. Their job was to report the past accurately.   - Why (Analytical): As technology automated routine tasks, accountants shifted focus. They analysed trends, explained variances, and answered the “why” behind the numbers. - So What (Strategic): Increasingly today and moving forward, accountants will be required to advise - to connect financial data to business outcomes. “What levers can we pull now to achieve our outcome?” 🔑 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: The future accountant is evolving. Neonopolis is a shopping mall on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. The owner, Rohit Joshi, plans to spend $300 million to add several rides to the roof of Neonopolis to create a new theme park called "Mini Disni." He is correct that shopping malls for goods are becoming a thing of the past, and is wise to add attractions and experiences to make use of the property, and bring footfall to the stores below. On the other hand, naming it "Mini Disni" is a really questionable choice. On the upside, he's already getting extra 'free press' about the name (and here I am helping do my part), and people will be able to remember it easily. On the other hand, the blatant appropriation of a beloved global brand known for its quality of theme parks and entertainment demonstrates a tragic lack of creativity and innovation. Perhaps I'm not the target market for this theme park. There are a few wonderful attractions in downtown Vegas (the Mob Museum is a must!), but for the most part I have a hard time finding reasons to step foot on Fremont except for professional curiosity.... and that one time I bought an amazing sequin hat. 😉 The idea of adding a theme park is a good one. The name just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Even though he thinks they are not violating any copyrights, I hope a healthy chunk of that $300 million is set aside for legal fees. What do you think?
