AI-powered video editing has completely changed my workflow. 🎬 I started editing videos in the early 2000's to promote the bands my friends and I were playing in. Despite all the improvements in hardware and software over the years, I've always found getting the first cut to be tedious. Descript has completely changed that. In my latest tutorial, I demonstrate how quickly AI video editing gets me from a long, incoherent take to a watchable first draft in minutes. I've gotten a million views on what I'm creating in the last 60 days. 1 million. Sounds like a clickbait headline, but it's the truth. Before becoming a Creative Director, I worked extensively in social media. I cannot tell you how many clients fixated on the "right" hashtags, or posting time of day, or song choices. This approach is exhausting from a purely tactical standpoint (I am flabbergasted for my 23-25-year-old self) - but also from a spiritual one. I believe we attract the people, things, and opportunities meant for us so 'tricking' my way into it was never aligned. That's not to say tactics don't matter - clear, interesting content is a must. But "hacking" into visibility never felt right, even before I discovered how to do things in a way that made sense. I've gotten a million views, and thousands of people interested enough to follow for the long haul by BEING MYSELF. Sharing what I love, using my voice, and contributing my opinion. There is no other person in this world with your unique blend of interests, tastes, and talents. Visual Touch-Ups ↳ Of the visual options, clients hate this least. 4. Text Improvements ↳ Meh. 5. Image Templates ↳ I get the idea...just not the right type of ugly. 6. 503! That's gotta be a record. For me, at least. 503 is how many videos I've edited for a single client/project since starting in 6 months ago. Not including versions or fixes. Oh, and speaking of records, I got another one last week. Cut a 60 second super rad video from 4+ hours of raw footage in a single day (just under 8 hours). Can't wait to share that one in the near future. Gotta savor them wins before diving back into the edit bay. Keeps us going, amiright? #videoproduction #videoediting #breakingrecords

National Election Party Poster Review Political party: Alliance of Citizens for Change Pros: No holding back on what they’ll do if put in power. Smiling man. Party logo - a kudu that stands for justice. Cons: Someone told them it’s all about the hashtags - it’s not 2010. Death & smiley man feels weird. Too much going on. Vote icons in case you don’t understand the word vote. Party logo inside the o of vote. Background image indistinguishable so what’s the point? ACC abbreviation doesn’t need full stops. The explanation of ACC shows lack of confidence.

I’ve been repped by 5 different agencies over 27 years, along with five different managers. A key takeaway: 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. Here is why... The senior, more experienced rep can get calls returned from higher-tier executives. This is good. But the younger rep has the energy and determination to withstand the lows of your career and those projects of yours that are tougher to sell. Why is that? Mostly because the younger rep has not discovered the Parento Principle yet, more commonly known as the 80/20 rule. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰, 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼�� 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. They likely still feel the satisfaction of “finding” new talent (Most writers don’t realize how much work goes into “breaking” a new writer. It’s hard!) 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟴𝟬/𝟮𝟬 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲. That is, 80% of results come from 20% of causes or effort. This realization is normal and part of their maturation. The rep gets older; they get more ambitious, they get married, they have kids, etc... They realize that most of their commissions come from easier-to-sell high concepts, more established clients, etc… When that happens, they make a strategic shift to move that 20% of their effort to 80% of their effort. In doing so, they improve their result by 400% 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗹𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. They are working just as hard as before. But they are getting better results. It is easier and more lucrative to OVERBOOK their TOP client than to push their LEAST-established client. This goes for staffing, too. Some clients are easier to staff than others for all kinds of reasons. The more senior agent knows they will get the highest revenue focusing their energy on them. So when pursuing reps, producers, or anyone... 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘀 Or those that specialize in breaking new talent (Some of whom are on LinkedIn.) And if an agency shows interest, make sure you have at least one young agent (They'll probably have that anyway, but just to be sure.) You're going to want someone who will still reply to your email if you don’t blow up quickly. It often feels like literary representation signifies legitimacy. It’s scary to be without it. "Writing is thinking." Yes, people, use AI to superpower your thinking – don't offload your actual thinking on AI! Commodity content – sure. Thought leadership – it's a hard NO. It's been said again and again – we can see your AI-generated writing from a mile away. Thought leadership requires unique insights and a strong POV. And it has to be *your* POV.

Tom McManimon—Founder of StimulusBrand Communications: “One of the best investments I’ve ever made is working on myself becoming a strong creative director. In that role, I get to influence teams of people and be their mentor, help them rise, and deliver their very best. In my career, I have surrounded myself with accomplished creative directors and learned from them. Another investment I’ve made is in public speaking. It’s one thing to present creative campaigns to CEOs or boards of directors which I have done for years, but another thing to be on a stage in front of a bigger audience—in  service to them. So, I enrolled in professional speaker training (again, from some of the very best) and learned a “thing or two.” I am in a career that requires that you know your target audience. The same holds true in speaking. Creating material that is relevant and meaningful is key. It became important to me to try to share messages and emotional stories that go beyond advertising to lift people and help business leaders have one of those lightbulb moments. To accomplish that, you have to learn to write well, rehearse it, and then deliver it as the authentic you. I was wise enough to surround myself with a team of people who were great at that and they help me every day to be compelling, engaging and on point.

A new darling has seduced the lips of today’s marketing braves. It wears an itsy-bitsy, and pirouettes on the desks of agency client relationships. Meet Ms Quirky. It sounds like something a toddler might invent when trying to describe their imaginary friend's pet unicorn. But now, it effectively defines the holy grail of global advertising. It’s the first arrow, and perhaps the only arrow, in the quiver of most marketing warriors. Every ad must be quirky. Every script, a quirky masterpiece. Every creative endeavor, a quirky explosion of whimsical brilliance. But what the duck does it mean? Put yourself at an agency presentation. You’ve just shared your campaign to your client, and you’re feeling very good about it. The client then leans forward, eyes gleaming like someone who's just discovered gluten-free kale chips. "We need something quirky," he declares. As he drops the latest marketing bombshell. You’d heard about this, but you didn’t expect this slap. Your mind races. Your brain cogs whirr. Is quirky a radio ad with a voice that sounds like a cat? Meow-ing its way through product benefits? Could be. Or perhaps it's a campaign about a dragon on a quest for the perfect idli, navigating through sambhar rivers and chutney mountains. Definitely quirky. Then there's a film in your head: a person with three heads and seven noses strolling into a café. “I'll have a triple espresso and seven doughnuts," they say, because of course, each head has its own unique coffee preference, and each nose wants a whiff of a different pastry. Quirky with a capital Q. But wait, there's more. Once you opened the door to Quirknia, there’s more to harvest. How about a print ad printed along the side of the newspaper? Or one smack dab in the middle of the daily crossword puzzle? Quirky, right? As you sit there, trying to unravel this term, you realize that quirky has become a catch-all for anything that's offbeat, eccentric, and kooky. It's the marketing equivalent of adding a naga chilli to your grandma's traditional custard pudding. Unexpected, a bit odd, spicy, but strangely delightful. But then, there’s a catch: what you find quirky, I might find utterly baffling. Quirky is like the wild west of creativity. It's a free-for-all where anything goes; the weirder, the better. Clients want their brand to stand out, and grab attention in a world where consumers are relentlessly bombarded. And therefore quirky, in its strange, unpredictable glory, seems to be the golden ticket. Beware, but. In the attempt to be quirky, there’s a fine line between charmingly odd and totally stupid. A lot of people sadly, just can’t seem to differentiate between the two. **One correction: Desktop app is only for Apple. Interesting play with some implications on the Bing integration and the MSFT relationship.** OpenAI rolls out GPT-4o in their big announcement today. The big themes that I have seen so far all seem to coalesce around the goal of making ChatGPT the accepted user experience and benchmark for LLMs now and in the future. Ways that they're hoping GPT-4o can help with that- - Making many paid features available for free users. - Making GPT-4o more efficient and higher performing. - Allowing memory to persist, which means multi-device personalization becomes more real. - Focusing on the concept of interactivity, especially via speech to text. Real time voice processing is one of the key features/advances as part of the GPT-4o. This part of the demo glitched a bit- hard to gauge if that was due to the live stream room noise interrupting the model. Voice demos seemed to emphasize human feeling which is strategic - as AI becomes intrusive and prevalent in society and our normal person to person interactions, we're going to want to avoid the uncanny valley experience. We also saw glitches where ChatGPT hallucinated seeing imagery before the camera was enabled- strange to see how the text hallucination tendency interplays with vision features (which could get weird and creepy IRL). #OpenAI opted to use an Apple device for the desktop app code demo (which felt significant given some recent rumors on that front). I'll note, I found the ChatGPT overshare/verbosity to be obnoxious, reminiscent of the phone trees that make you listen to the full cycle of text. While I could interrupt, more human seeming interactions might make that feel unnormal and uncomfortable. Even the presenters seemed to be a bit uncomfortable. #AI #machinelearning #openai #gpt4o

On AI Hallucinations A lot of folks think unexpected responses from Artificial Intelligence, often called AI hallucination, is a problem - or bugs. I see it a bit differently. To me, it's like a surprise ingredient that might just make the recipe better. These quirks could spark new ideas. So, instead of seeing it as an issue, let's treat it as a chance for more creativity. Embrace the ghost in the machine. B2B is NOTORIOUS for wasting money on video! If you want MORE video, make this change: Ok, first off, let's identify the culprit: single video deliverables (e.g. "We want to create an overview video"). WHAT A WASTE!!! Can you seriously justify spending 5 figure$ and hours of executive time for a 2-minute deliverable? This is why B2B never seems to be able to create the amount of video they need. But, there's hope! The second you move away from a single deliverable mindset, you open the possibility of finally adopting an effective video strategy.
