🚫 As a passionate advocate for health equity and access to care, alongside many healthcare providers throughout the State, we stand firmly against HB 350. This proposed legislation threatens to undermine years of progress made in Delaware towards achieving health equity for all residents. The bill, as outlined below in a recent article from ChristianaCare, authored by Dr. LeRoi Hicks, would have detrimental effects on the most vulnerable communities in our state. It's imperative that we do not regress in our efforts to ensure equitable access to healthcare services, especially in light of the ongoing health disparities exacerbated by the pandemic. Please join us in urging local lawmakers to reconsider HB 350 and prioritize the well-being of all Delawareans. Now is not the time to backtrack on our commitment to health equity. It's been two years since the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision. The latest state scorecard by The Commonwealth Fund offers a baseline for evaluating the impacts of policy changes resulting from the ruling. Surveying data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the scorecard delves into the status of women's health and reproductive care in the U.S. The study uncovers concerning trends: States with restrictions tend to have fewer maternity care providers, with the highest maternal death rates observed in states with full bans. The research highlights that the gaps in women's health and reproductive care may widen in post-Roe America, particularly affecting Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native women, along with those with low incomes in states with limited care access. CMS has announced Maryland, Connecticut, and Vermont as the first three states to participate in the AHEAD Model. This total cost of care (TCOC) model seeks to drive down state and regional health care costs while simultaneously improving health outcomes. This is a huge step forward in leveraging health care payment and delivery to slow rising health care costs plaguing U.S. families and is yet another example of measures to move toward more sustainable, value-based care. https://lnkd.in/gWWG5ik2

👀 Big news in peer support, including supervision and youth peer support. This week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage of peer support services. Questions and answers included: 🟢What are the federal Medicaid requirements regarding the types of individuals who may supervise peer support providers? ➡️ [Supervisors] of peer support providers may include other peers with more experience and training in the provision of peer support services, even if the supervising peer support provider does not have formal behavioral health training or licensure. 🟢 Can state Medicaid programs cover peer support services for youth? ➡️ Yes, state Medicaid programs may cover youth peer support services. Thoughtful Stewardship Motivates Other Donors As seasoned fundraisers will attest, many major donors will, upon making a gift commitment, say they want no recognition and a surprising number say they would prefer to remain anonymous. I don't know how many say that because it's how they feel or because they think that is what they should say. It doesn't really matter. My standard response was "We need your example." Example is important in philanthropy and fundraising. I wanted to afford my donors recognition because I knew it would be inspiring and motivating to others - if we told their story in the right way. All too often we squander the opportunity of example. We announce the amount someone has given and make some banal statements about the transformative effect it will have but rarely do we follow up and demonstrate the actual transformational impact years down the road. Even sadder, we don't do enough to publicize why the donor gave or highlight the values that underpinned and motivated their giving. Yet, the story of why one donor gave can be highly motivating to other current and potential donors. We seem to forget that many of us spend our lives trying to become better people. We seek to liberate our big and altruistic side from our small, selfish and self-protective side. We don't always know how to do that but we try. It's why we look to the examples of others, why we look for people we can admire and emulate. It's not how much someone gave but why. When we hear about someone giving because they want to spare others from the loss or pain visited on them or their loved ones, we revisit our pain and loss and ask ourselves if we have done enough to spare others. When we hear about someone giving to return what they think was a good done for them years ago, we go back to our past and ourselves if we have paid due credit to those who were most helpful in our formative years. When we hear someone giving because they felt fortune smiled on them, we think more about our good fortune and how we might share it. The more we seize on the power of example through effective storytelling, we help others reflect and say to themselves: That's who I want to be like. That's how I could give more meaning to my life. That's how I can become a better person. It's not the size of the gift we celebrate, it's the examples of how people turn to philanthropy to forgive, to convert struggle and loss to purpose, to remember and honor those that shaped their lives, to chip away at injustices visited on them, to provide others opportunities they never had, and to bequeath more to the future than they inherited from the past. We need these examples and these stories. We want to be in the presence of people striving to do good with their lives. We look for ways to be better people. The more thoughtfully we steward and share each donor's story, the more we widen the philanthropic path.

🏥💡 Exploring the Intersection of Public Reporting, Pay for Performance, and Hospital Rankings 💡🏥 NEAHQ had the distinct pleasure of hosting Dr. Michael Calderwood of Dartmouth Health in yesterday’s webinar: Public Reporting, Pay for Performance, and Hospital Rankings. Dr. Calderwood is the Chief Quality Officer at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. In the webinar he summarized the evolution of hospital performance evaluation from process to outcomes-based metrics and the implications such a system has on patients, providers, and healthcare overall. _____________ Public reporting empowers patients by providing access to vital information about healthcare providers' performance metrics, such as infection rates, readmission rates, and patient satisfaction scores. This transparency fosters informed decision-making and encourages providers to strive for excellence in care delivery. Pay for performance initiatives incentivize hospitals and healthcare professionals to achieve specific quality targets or outcomes by linking financial rewards to performance metrics. By aligning incentives with desired outcomes, pay for performance models promote efficiency, quality improvement, and patient-centered care. Hospital rankings, whether through independent assessments or consumer-driven platforms, serve as valuable tools for patients seeking high-quality care. These rankings consider various factors, including clinical outcomes, patient experience, and safety measures, to assess hospitals' overall performance and guide patients in selecting healthcare providers. However, while these initiatives aim to drive positive change in healthcare delivery, they also pose challenges. Concerns regarding data accuracy, risk adjustment methodologies, and unintended consequences, such as gaming the system or neglecting non-measured aspects of care, underscore the complexity of implementing these strategies effectively. As stakeholders continue to navigate the intricacies of public reporting, pay for performance, and hospital rankings, collaboration and innovation are essential. By leveraging technology, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and prioritizing patient-centered care, we can harness the power of these initiatives to enhance healthcare quality and outcomes for all. 🌟 Join me for a conversation on Women’s Leadership: At the Intersection of Health, Law, and Equity on July 31, 2024! The intersectionality of health, law, and equity is critical in addressing systemic health disparities by ensuring that legal frameworks are responsive to the diverse needs of communities. Effective leadership in this intersection can drive systemic change, fostering a more just and inclusive health system that prioritizes equity and justice for underserved groups. Research shows that an intersectional approach helps to uncover overlapping systems of discrimination, thereby guiding the development of more effective and inclusive health laws and policies. Women’s leadership is more critical than ever in shaping equitable health outcomes and inclusive policies. Women bring invaluable perspectives and skills, such as emotional intelligence, inclusivity, and resilience​ , to leadership roles—exactly what we need.​ Despite significant progress, women, especially women of color, continue to face systemic barriers in these fields. Women comprise 70% of the global healthcare workforce but hold only 25% of senior roles​​. Despite women constituting nearly half of law school graduates, they represent only 20% of leadership roles in law. The push for women's leadership is at an all-time high today. Yet, we're witnessing a troubling cliff-hanging scenario where a significant number of women, particularly women of color, are stepping off the ladder. Studies support that women are more likely to be appointed to high-risk executive roles when companies and nonprofits are struggling or facing significant challenges. This phenomenon, known as the "glass cliff," places women in precarious positions where they are at greater risk of encountering ‘failure.’  Compounding these risks, women, particularly women of color, are harshly judged and face higher scrutiny in their leadership roles, exacerbating the challenges they already endure due to other structural barriers such as gender discrimination, racism, and misogyny. Together, these factors create a doubly challenging landscape for women leaders, making their successes even more significant and their failures more scrutinized. Women’s leadership journeys shouldn't be endless struggles that feel like continually walking on sharp pebbles. While dismantling deeply ingrained oppressive colonial and patriarchal structures may take centuries, we can ease the journey by fostering a supportive community and leveraging the collective agency of women at every level. To ensure that women reach the top and thrive there, we need a comprehensive continuum of strategies that address systemic barriers and provide ongoing support and development opportunities.
