Yields have reacted by rerating significantly higher this month, while stocks have pulled back from overbought conditions. Technical damage is beginning to mount on the S&P 500, but its longer-term uptrend remains intact. INFLATION REMAINS A THORN ON THE ECONOMY: "While year-over-year consumer inflation dipped slightly to 3.0% in June, wholesale inflation shifted back upward from 2.2% to 2.6%. Q1-2024 CU PERFORMANCE IS EASY TO EXPLAIN - AND IT'S NOT FOR THE REASON YOU MIGHT THINK": Q1-24 CU Peer Performance: https://lnkd.in/giiF9gjq Net operating return dropped from 0.62% to 0.51% ... But despite a 42bp increase in cost of funds (due to higher cost promotional CDs issued to combat liquidity needs), gross margin was UNCHANGED at 3.00% - so interest revenues were able to absorb higher interest expense. So the 11bp drop in Q1 return can be directly attributable to a 6bp increase in net operating expense and a 5bp increase in provision expense despite loan delinquency declining from 0.83% to 0.78% but net charge offs increasing from 0.61% to 0.80%

This is a relatively new series to me, and it has been subject to considerable revision, but it’s one of the only official reads on new rents. It’s average rents that get reported in PCE and CPI. This is important because new rents tell you what’s happening in the housing market as opposed to what the experience is for the average renter. The New Tenant Rent Index leads both the CPI Rent Index and the Cleveland Fed “All Tenant” Rent Index by about three quarters. It also tracks the Apartment List and Zillow new rent indexes, which are private and released monthly. The bigger point here is that it argues that there will be considerable downward pressure on core inflation later in the year. We shall see. Happy Thursday. FT

Interesting but not really relevant. Seems to suggest that stepped up collection notices on already deficient tax obligations resulted in the tax haul. The real effort will need to focus on partnership abuses and personal use of aircraft and this will take a number of years to begin to see results.
