The concept of personas is trickling down into the K-12 education space! A few summers ago, I partnered with colleagues from NYU ECT at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. We offered PD on personas to Shoelace Learning (builders of Dreamscape)'s summer teacher team. For nearly every teacher who attended, the concept was unfamiliar to them. Today, I'm seeing state-level departments of education investing in the development of a Portrait of a Learner. Even cooler, I'm seeing superintendents building them for districts! I highly recommend these models as a way to set a clear organizational vision and guide strategic planning. Want help getting started? AI in Education 🤖 - what does Teacherbot do to help schools, authorities and individuals integrate AI and keep abreast of the changes. A very timely opinion piece about the use of artificial intelligence in education, by Jane Rosenzweig, director of the Harvard College Writing Center — https://lnkd.in/earixAiW “One middle school principal told me that ‘keeping up with the technology is overwhelming — just when we get a handle on it, the landscape changes.’ Meanwhile, a November survey of K-12 educators found 79 percent of those surveyed said their school districts had no clear policies about the use of AI in the classroom. As recently as February, a survey of school superintendents found that only 37 percent had plans for training teachers in AI usage. Part of the problem is that the conversation about AI in education has been dominated by the companies churning out AI tools rather than by the teachers in the classrooms. An interesting read. I agree that AI needs to become a component of how we teach and learn in our schools. Should it be a separate course? (Don’t get me started on the logistics of curriculum and licensure!) I’m not opposed, but I think we need to consider that educational leaders are overwhelmed with the demands of the modern classroom experience. We need to guide our leaders on how to successfully integrate this amazing tool so that they can provide the infrastructure and PD our classroom teachers need to use it well.

Well, as predicted, a modified reading assistance program for students with reading needs, integrating and balancing various elements, outperforms a narrowly focused Structured Literacy Phonics-only program. https://lnkd.in/g_r7pgxm It's interesting to note that comprehension/checking testing is not considered an important goal in SLit years 1-3, which seems bizarre !?? It's crucial to understand that this still isn't a classroom program but a recovery program for individuals and small groups of students who are significantly behind their 6-year-old peers after one year in school. With this shift in performance outcomes, it's expected that some schools will now reconsider and possibly redesign their year 1 programs, and potentially modify year 2-3 programs as well. The looming question remains: will the Ministry of Education and the Government continue closing and defunding the New Reading Recovery program?
