Projects

  • Solar Sterling Generator (Capstone Project)

    - Present

The project entails the design, prototyping, build, and testing of a portable solar powered stirling engine generator. A stirling engine is a sealed external combustion engine that uses heat supplied from the sun to produce linear motion. The linear motion is then converted to rotational motion via a linkage which is connected to a flywheel and generator. The system needs to produce 10W, interface using a USB port, and be less than 20 lbs.

  • Donovan Building Energy Model for NYSERDA

    -

Energy model of the renovated Donovan Building in Buffalo, NY. eQUEST software was used in conjunction with MS Excel to examine the energy impact of a natural gas boiler fed hybrid heat pump system (basement through 4th floor) and a variable refrigerant flow system (floors 5-8), both supplied by dedicated outdoor air systems. This was then compared to baseline systems listed in the ASHRAE 90.1 Standard, Appendix G. The analysis of a high efficiency 5 floor gearless traction elevator was also…

  • Photovoltaic Array for a Farmhouse

    -

The proposal and specification of a stand alone Photovoltaic (PV) System that is capable fo providing 75% of the power requirement of a farmhouse. Key components of this project involved PV module, power conditioning and wiring specification, economic analysis, feasability analysis, environmental impact analysis, use of local meterological data and government incentives.

  • Stadium Rainwater Recirculation System

    -

Proposal, optimization and specification of a system that would collect rainwater from under a baseball stadium, pump it through a filter and UV purification system and into a collection basin. It would then be pumped through a second pump to a sprinkler system on the stadium floor. The focus of this project was sizing of pumps and related plumbing, and determining the specific losses due to the pump characteristics and piping components. An Excel model for both pumping systems was produced for…

  • HVAC Module Final Inspection Machine

    -

Design and project management of an inspection machine to test automotive HVAC modules. The machine was pallet fed and consisted of two stations. The first station performed a leak test on the Evaporator and Heater Core, the second station tested the correctness of the model, the temperature sensors, airflow valves, temperature sensors and functionally tested the wire harnesses.

  • Paired SOFC/Rankine CHP System

    -

Proposal and Specifications for a combined Solid Oxide Fuel Cell/Rankine Cycle Combined Heat and Power System that could be used to provide electricity, heat, hot water and process steam for a manufacturing facility. The project was for Dr. Diane England, professor at RIT.

  • Small Savonius Wind Turbine

    -

The design, COMSOL simulation, build and characterization of a tabletop Savoinus (Vertical Axis) wind turbine. The system was tested in a wind tunnel and produced 19.3 Volts and a power value of 20.3 mA.

  • Fuel Cell Stack Press

    -

Design of a 10 ton vertical hydraulic press machine used to assemble fuel cell stacks. The press featured interchangeable tooling, as well as force and head position data.

  • Autonomous Golf Ball Collecting Robot

    -

The objective of this project was to design, document, build and program an autonomous robot that collects red and blue colored golf balls along figure 8 shaped track, sort them by color, and dispense them into the goals of the corresponding color at opposite ends of the track. In addition to the above objectives, project management, budgeting, oral and written presentation skills were essential components of this project.

  • Semi Manual Radiator Assembly Stand

    -

Design of a semi manual radiator assembly machine that would allow an operator to ergonomically assemble and clinch a radiator for use in the automotive industry. The project entailed pneumatic logic circuits, mechanical power transmission systems, operator safety and ergonomics.

  • Labyrinth Seal Demonstration Unit

    -

Design of a portable demonstration unit for labyrinth seals to be taken to trade expos. The stand had two sections; the first section consisted of a water jet being applied continuously to the seal with an air chamber on the opposite side of the seal to prove the sealing capability. The section consisted of a fan agitating talcum powder with an air chamber on the other side of the seal, again proving its sealing capability.
