Author and finance guru, Tom Henske has written a much needed book, It Makes Total Cents, to guide parents on how to discuss money with their children.

Investors have experienced higher than normal volatility with their investment portfolios recently. As such, the topic of “sequence of returns” has started once again to come to the forefront of discussions between clients and their investment advisors.

Financial planner and educator Tom Henske sits down with InvestmentNews anchor Gregg Greenberg to talk about his book on raising a financially fit child, "It Makes Total Cents."

Henske, author of It Makes Total Cents, said money was a taboo topic for many people when they were growing up. As a result, they never learned to invest or budget wisely. “The reluctance to talk about money in the home has led to some very bad habits,” he said. “Our industry has a chance, maybe even an obligation, to be the difference-maker. For advisors, it’s about future-proofing their practices.”

Henske, of the Total Cents program, stresses that spreading financial literacy is good for an advisor’s brand and reputation. “It is not hard to do, costs little money, and has huge relationship-building benefits,” he said. Show less

However, payday loans’ astronomical rates of interest—often as high as 400% APR—mean they should be a last resort because lenders charge astronomical fees, says Thomas Henske, a certified financial planner in New York. “People who need a payday loan…don’t have any other options,” he says.

“Cash-value insurance can be a very powerful vehicle to utilize,” said Tom Henske, financial advisor at The Affluent Insurance Advisor in New York City. “During volatile markets, retirees with a healthy amount of cash value in their whole life policies might choose to draw from this account while their equity accounts are temporarily down, allowing these equity accounts to remain undisturbed until such time as the markets stabilize.”
