  • How a start-up hub made good on diversity goals.

    USA Today

    [Excerpt]

"DURHAM, N.C. — The American Underground, a campus for entrepreneurs here, established a bold goal at the start of 2015: To build the most diverse start-up hub in the country inside of two years.

WHO WE ARE – It’s simple – we’re a group of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County professionals under 40. If that describes you, you’re already one of us. WHO WE AREN’T – We aren’t a secret society, an anonymous support group or a cult. There are no dues to pay, no hazing rituals to endure and you never have to sell anything door-to-door. WHO WE AREN’T – We aren’t a secret society, an anonymous support group or a cult. There are no dues to pay, no hazing rituals to endure and you never have to sell anything door-to-door. We have no hidden agenda, require no blood oath and you don’t have to announce your weight at every meeting (although you can if you like). Yes, we are part of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, but you don’t have to be a Chamber member to be part of Winston40. OUR GOAL – That’s simple, too – we want to help create and cultivate the next generation of community and business leaders in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. That sounds pretty lofty and dry, but how we do it isn’t. We accomplish our goal by offering you unique opportunities in the areas of community engagement, professional development and social activities (more on those below) that allow you to connect with your peers in the community. This produces partnerships, friendships and alliances that can help you get ahead and make your mark, and help our city and community grow. http://www.winstonsalem.com/organizations-for-young-professionals-in-winston-salem/?
