Incognia’s recent feedback from a financial services customer: "You are the best provider we have in terms of partnership by far." We don’t just build a great product. We work very closely with our customers, and we provide excellent support. 2 big reasons why Incognia’s support is so good: 1️⃣ We don’t charge for services. We don’t charge based on the amount of time we spend providing services to a customer. This creates the right incentive to solve their problems efficiently. If you make more money the longer you work on a customer’s problem… You don’t really have an incentive to solve that problem quickly. The longer it takes, the more your company profits. Because Incognia doesn’t charge for services, we're more efficient and effective in the way we work with our customers to solve problems. This approach also means we’re incentivized to automate and improve the right things. After all, we’re not getting paid more to do the same tasks over and over again. 2️⃣ Many of our Customer Success team members are deeply experienced fraud fighters. Many of them started out on the other side of the table. They worked as fraud fighters for food delivery platforms, marketplaces, financial services. They have first-hand experience. And they also have empathy for the customer. They know what it’s like to be in their shoes. I’m really proud of the support the Incognia team provides to our customers.

7 years ago, I started my 4th business We raised $450k in a crowdfunding campaign for our first client. Within 2 years, we worked with Microsoft, Segment, Envoy, Perfect Keto, and dozens of other clients. We wrote for Techcrunch. We gave talks at YC and Google. We even got accepted into YC in 2019. In a few years, we had created two 7-figure brands, Bell Curve and Demand Curve. But nobody knew who I was. I hid behind the brands—and let my cofounder, Julian, be the face. He leveraged his writing to reach millions of people while working together. The result? - My network was small - I was never asked to be an advisor - I was never asked to speak on podcasts - I only got DMs from recruiters and SDRs - I relied on Julian to meet other cool founders 2 years ago, Julian moved on to start an investment fund. I decided to stop hiding behind the brand. I started posting on LinkedIn multiple times per week. I didn’t expect to: 1. Hit 50k followers in the first year. 2. Be asked to be an advisor frequently. 3. Get invited to speak at conferences. 4. Get DM'd by some of my startup heroes. Nor did I expect to create UNIGNORABLE, which earned $500k+ in its first few months—part-time. I just hoped it would help grow our newsletter, attract more agency clients, and reduce my reliance on Julian to make connections. (Which it has.) My follower count is great for my ego. But what I care about are the knock-on effects. I know, I know. These transformation stories on LinkedIn are cringe and contrived. But I swear this is the truth. Every week, I reflect on how different my life looks today. A lot of the people I interact with daily are a direct result of writing. And how my entire business was bootstrapped off my cofounder's personal audience. Rent the Runway is having its lunch eaten by Urban Outfitters' Nuuly. Q3 '23 Results: -RTR $21.9M operating LOSS -Nuuly $300k operating PROFIT -RTR 6% revenue drop YoY -Nuuly 86% revenue increase YoY -RTR 132k active subs (down 2% YoY) -Nuuly 198k active subs (up 68% YoY) Why? Rent the Runway has three MAJOR cost centres to its business: 1/ Fairly high acquisition costs I still think RTR is in the process of creating demand, persuading consumers, and driving up GMV. This is proving costly. 2/ Very high R&D costs RTR is building and maintaining a lot of proprietary tech to service its business model as well as investing a lot into their ecommerce experience. This means they basically have the tech costs of a tech business. Case in point: $12M R&D spend in Q3 '23 alone (~18% of revenue) 🤯 3/ Thin margins RTR isn't a fashion brand in itself. Inventory comes mainly via purchasing stock from other brands at a wholesale rate. This leaves them with the R&D costs of a tech business mentioned above, but with the margins of a retail business. Now, let's contrast this to Nuuly: ✅ Lower acquisition costs Urban Outfitters already has a huge audience across its other brands that can be redirected and help drive down the cost of acquisition. 😕 Still relatively high R&D costs Urban has reportedly stumped up around $100M up front. ✅ Much better margins Nuuly doesn't need to source stock via wholesale from other brands. They ARE the brand (or, at least Urban is). Plus, stock can also often be sourced from cost centres in the other brands. E.g. returns at Urban can then become ready-to-use stock on Nuuly. This means MUCH healthier margins. The lesson here for other rental merchants? You HAVE to find a competitive advantage in AT LEAST one, but ideally two or all three of those cost centres: CAC, R&D, and margins. This will give you an excellent foundation for growth and the best chance of succeeding. #ecommerce #rentalcommerce #circulareconomy #sustainability

HELP YOUR INVESTORS HELP YOU B2B Startup founders: don’t rely on your investors for intros to early design partners. You must get those yourself. However, once you prove real value (eg grow revenues, reduce costs, increase operational efficiency) with a small number of paying customers, your best investors will be able to help make scaled intros to prospects. Your investors are excited to ping potential customers on your behalf once they feel like they are doing a favor to the company by introducing them to your product. So - give them the ammunition and data to do so. The more quantitative the metrics, the better.
