To date, there have been nearly 80 million COVID-19 cases, over 975,000 deaths, and approximately 4.6 million total reported COVID-19 hospital admissions since the pandemic began. We have all
longed to get back to normal. However, the new “normal” in healthcare may look very different than it did pre-pandemic. With rising labor costs and critical staffing shortages, our hospitals are still fighting COVID in new and different ways.
In the early days of the pandemic, government support helped overcome the financial challenges faced. Hospitals’ operating margins, however, are still below pre-pandemic levels, largely due to outsized growth in expenses. Higher-acuity patients and a drop in outpatient services during the pandemic have affected hospital finances, but labor expenses have grown nearly 13% on an absolute basis
and 19.1% on a per-patient basis. Hospitals and health systems are paying $24 billion per year more for qualified clinical labor than pre-pandemic.
