Providing Full Spectrum Legal Advice: Partnering in Both Business and the Law

Now more than ever, lawyers are called upon to provide full-spectrum legal advice to clients. Both complex and routine legal engagements often require advising clients on the strategic business implications of their choices in addition to providing legal solutions. Full-spectrum lawyering, for example, includes being able to provide media analysis via a common-sense questioning of whether a response to an issue will pass a “Wall Street Journal / New York Times" test, if released. This session will explore how to leverage being a savvy lawyer to become a trusted advisor to both in-house counsel and business people alike. Strategies include taking advantage of unexpected career opportunities, developing executive presence, understanding the business perspective, the partnering of in-house and outside counsel, and finally, speaking the client’s language to effectively communicate with business people. This session is geared to outside and in-house counsel, as well as lawyers in government, military, and virtually any position; every client has needs and expectations of its lawyer that go beyond pure legal advice.
