Resulting complications may include decreased peak HR, VO2max, aerobic capacity, ROM, strength, and lack of recovery from physical activity.2,7,8 Unfortunately, research is considerably lacking to explore the use of particular physical therapy interventions in conjunction with surgery to improve the developmental outcomes as well as the quality of life for patients with HLHS.

The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the effectiveness of physical therapy interventions on children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) characteristics such as a large patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect and Tetralogy of Fallot due to decreased exercise performance and tolerance in this population.
