To all of my Arizona registered professionals, I need your help... Today the Arizona State Senate had a difficult time coming to a conclusion that our Arizona State Board of Technical Registration was important enough to continue. What started as a bill to continue the AZ BTR for eight years has morphed into an earmarked bill containing provisions to limit the boards oversight and disciplinary authority, and only offer a two year continuation. Unfortunately, HB 2632 failed third read advancement in the State Senate today. What does this mean...? It means, that if immediate action is not taken then the Board will begin termination activities as outlined in ARS 41-2956. As of July 1, 2024, the six month clock will begin ticking, and on January 1, 2025 our board (and licenses) will no longer exist. No offense, but that is not acceptable! I worked way too hard, put myself through school for over a decade, dreamed of becoming a PE, and have sacrificed too much of my life to see at all go up in smoke. Please please PLEASE help me bombard the inboxes, phones, and offices of your AZ State Senators and demand that they pass this bill. We as professional engineers have taken an ethical oath to always put the health and well-being of the public at the forefront of all that we do. Good Afternoon: NRD staff successfully installed the prefabricated floodwall over the BNSF tracks in Bellevue this morning at 7:00 a.m. Consequently, at this time the R-613 and R-616 levees are sealed as tight as they can be in anticipation of the cresting of the Missouri River later this evening or Wednesday. A big shoutout of appreciation to Houston Engineering, City of Bellevue (Director Davidson and Mayor Hike), the BNSF, Graham Construction and obviously our very professional and dedicated NRD staff who put that wall together in about 2 hours. Missouri River Flood Crest has been revised upward again from 35.1 feet to about 35.4 feet. Timing of when the peak will occur in our area is still uncertain, however, confidence in the certainty of the peak elevations is higher now than before. Therefore, NRD staff will begin 24/7 monitoring of the levee system in the next 24 hours or so. USGS completed the installation of the Rapid Deployable gauge on the Highway 75 Bridge near La Platte which will assist in monitoring the backflow levels of the Missouri River and its effects on the Platte River. In our 12:00 p.m. call with the National Weather Service today it was discussed that most of the river and creek gauges in the northern part of the watershed have peaked and dropping or at least stabilized. There was a levee breach in Smithland Iowa and the Rapidan Dam partially failed or is near complete failure in Minnesota. As you may have already heard I-680 in Iowa and I-29 in Iowa have or will be closing. Future weather forecast in the next 24 hours are uncertain of where exactly rain will fall. Current projections indicate the heaviest rains will be in Southeast NE, Southwest IA, and Northwest MO. However, some models have indicated of a possible chance of heavy rains in NE Nebraska as well. Please remember that only precipitation in a 24 hour period are calculated in projected flood flows, so any additional rain will change the calculus. Future weather projections have more chances of significant rain in the western part of the state on Wednesday with rain returning to the Omaha Metro Area Thursday and Thursday night. The I-70 traffic corridor near Floyd Hill in Colorado is notorious for its heavy congestion and narrow lanes. Colorado DOT initiated a project to improve travel time reliability, enhance safety, and address the aging infrastructure along the eight-mile section of the mountain road. The project involves widening and redesigning the highway, replacing six old bridges, and upgrading interchanges and intersections along the route. Two wildlife crossings will be built under bridge spans to reconnect natural habitats that were disrupted by the road. AtkinsRéalis, tasked as the lead designer, faced site constraints and challenging topography while needing to minimize the impact on environmentally sensitive areas and existing roadways. To achieve this, they used Bentley solutions to create digital twins from the 3D models for better visibility. Working in a connected digital environment, the team could communicate design intent with stakeholders, integrate with the community, and update models quickly to avoid environmental and social impact. When finished, in addition to reducing traffic congestion and new wildlife passageways, it will also improve existing pedestrian and bike trails. Construction is expected to be completed in 2028. #infrastructure #engineering #construction

We need strong transportation networks but this does not mean more or larger road networks at the demise of communities. The US had a huge opportunity for rail, failed by the monopoly system of privatized rail. Light rail has become difficult to impossible as there odd simply too much urban sprawl. Can central multimodal transportation fix our current transportation issues in areas heavily affected by urban sprawl? Could centralized light rail stations connected to multi modal hubs work and prevent more destruction of communities? Imagine driving no more than 10 minutes to a station that rapidly arrive to a destination ready with an array of tasting options to your ultimate destination. Imagine all of this being faster than your car commute and cheaper than your gas. Better transportation is possible, if we are willing to imagine it.
